View Full Version : Mini Driver compared to the Spitfire

This is just a repeat of a review that I posted in the General News thread. I though it would be more helpful here...

Some differences really stand out compared to the Spitfire:

The first thing I noticed is that catch-ability is a little stunted compared to the Spitfire. When I paddle for a wave I really put my weight into the front of the board with my chest and it feels like the board hits the brakes. I have to settle my weight back a little and it improves. Similarly, when I stand up, if I put my front foot down and really start pushing off of it (like I do with the Spitfire) the board hits the brakes. I have to tilt it back a bit and then the board takes off. I think these things are just common differences between a fish outline and a hpsb. For me, it's a really good challenge because every time I venture into the hpsb range I have less fun.

It has much more grovel power then the Alternator. Once I adjust my initial weight back, the board has all the quick speed of the Spitfire but with much more control. I can take off early or late, use my weight, and really force the board to take off, even if there isn't much wave. It can do 2ft beach break no problem. I always found that I couldn't generate speed on my Alternator. I needed a fairly good wave to make it happen.

The tail. I've always liked the look of round tails but they've always felt a little dead under my feet unless the waves are overhead. This board is quick right on take-off. You can feel that flat area right in them middle of the board and it's a similar feel to the Spitfire. It also has great hold. I caught a couple overhead waves this weekend and noticed that I can bottom turn mid-face with confidence. With the Spitfire I would have to be very ginger about where I set my rail on a steep drop or the board would just flop over on me.

The tail rocker really helps me to the get the board back under my feet after going off the top. Sometimes the tail flatness of the Spitfire results in it drifting out from under my feet if I break the fins out over the lip. The tail rocker on this board keeps it under my feet. It's refreshing.

If I could change anything i would reduce the nose rocker just a bit because it reduces catch-ability and that's really important to me considering our crazy crowded line-ups. But over all I consider a good "next level" board for anybody who's been spending most of their time on a groveler.

Thanks, and any one else got a run down, sounds like a good step up from a spit, Dom, or spud. Do you have any photos.

I have a PU Mini driver. Great board. Good mix between user friendlyness and performance. Lots of Drive. Need waves with some push too realy start working. But catches almost any wave over 2'.

i really like the standard dims on the Lost Mini Driver. I wish they hadn't changed them when migrating to Firewire.

hey csarqui,
if you want a slightly more volumetric Mini Driver, you should consider the unibrow. FREAKING INSANE!!! that board blew me away. just has a better small wave versatility than the more performance MD.

Cheers!

Was meaning to ask you the dims you tried on the Unibrow Chris??

What's a Unibrow? Where I can read about it?

Nothing has been published about it yet. There's some photos from the boardroom show on the Facebook page and on Instagram. It's a more refined Dominator style board. Looks good!

i rode a 510 19 1/2 2 1/2, 30.5 liter. Half a liter more than my sub scorcher. but its really tapered and doesn't feel that thick. The tail is way thinner than a Dominator as well. it rides insane. maybe the fastest hybrid I have ever tried. It will replace my Dominator, that is why I kept the volume up but it really has a way better performance ceiling.

We'll be getting more info up online about the board once we are finished sussing out the rest of the sizes...

Cheers

You guys! Just when I thought what my next board would be you come along and throw a toolbox of spanners into the plans.

Early days as yet but Chris you think the MD is more of a performance board than the unibrow?

I guess I'm just looking for more elaboration.

Great news about the Unibrow, I find if you ride a little 'over-volumed' cos a your a bit older or don't surf every week, the spit and doms get too thick in the rail in the longer lengths and feel less connected to the wave (for me anyway). This board sounds like it could be the answer. When are they likely to get to Australasia Chris?

Spot on Magnet, its OK for an average surfer but if you are a bit more high-performance then the unwanted thickness becomes an issue cos it reduces sensitivity. Unibrow looks the business!

Come on Chris, cough up... Unibrow sizes and dimensions..... Just about to hit the go button on a CBD dominator but not sure now. Nose width info and how well these board paddle compared to the dom would be handy... After all, the cats out the bag.

Was just getting excited about the prospect of an MD as a step-up for my dom and now there is the Unibrow!
I'm with Freaked_out please can you tell us more :)

I'm guessing there isn't a lot of other info for you yet! Early days.

Very pretty indeed. It looks to have a little more rocker overall than the Dom, which is great. There appears though to be a fair amount of volume in them. Any idea if that is concentrated around the centre and then incresingly more refined toward the rails? I only ask because both the 6'4" and 6'6" (which would be the appropriate boards for my size) appear to have around 1/8" to 2/8" more thickness than I'd have expected.

Looks like the wide point is a little below center. I wonder if the Unibrow is to the Dominator is as the Hellfire is to the Spitfire? (did I say that right?)

Chris

not quite!!

The Unibrow is a bit more thinned out, but with a more conventional high performance bottom contour. THe hellfire is a pretty radical shape. The Unibrow is a little more of a performance ripper with some hybrid DNA.
