What board would everyone recommend for a trip to Morocco
The Dom always comes away with me but what others would be the goods

If you're looking at surfing the points in the Tagazoute area I'd take something with a decent rail line and not too much tail rocker. The faces can be long but not too steep on higher tides unless you're surfing tight in the pocket and a board with a lot of rocker didn't feel right to me.
The points don't really work too well until they get overhead either so take something that you're comfortable in 1.5 to 2x overhead waves. A few extra inches is ideal I reckon.
That said, low tide and around head high the points get pretty rippable on a standard shorty. Killers is fun when it's smaller but on a big swell it gets pretty serious with a lot of paddling. Mysteries is a lot of fun when it's around head high for the Dom or a normal short board. Fast down the line and hollow.
If the swell is smaller Boilers is always a little bigger than the Anchors area, that's nice on a regular shortboard and if it's super small swell Tamri is about 20-30 minutes north and is a fun beach break that always has waves.
I hear there's some great waves to the south that pick up plenty of swell too if you're up for some exploring!

Thanks for your quick reply
Sounds like a board such as the Hellrazor or Mini Driver would be ideal
Do you think it would still be worth throwing in say a flexfire or MB

Yeah for sure. If you surf at the right tides and stuff there's plenty of hollow stuff that suits those boards. My only issue with the MD and HZ is when it's solid I'd like a little more length. I went out on a 2x overhead plus day on my 602 Taj and didn't get a wave because I just didn't have the paddle power to get in without taking off in the lip and I didn't fancy that. My mates were all on boards 3-4" longer than their standard boards and they caught a few good ones.
I think something like the 602 round tail Alternator would be a nice board for decent sized Anchors and Killers. A bit of extra volume and lower rocker for paddling and that pulled in round tail for control.

We had quite a few days at this size and a little smaller while I was there and they a couple days where it was solid.

Nah one of the guys I was there with. Even though we had a friend of a friend on the point most sessions shooting photos, I still managed to come home after 3 weeks with none of me...
I didn't know the guys shooting very well and I think they were just snapping the guys they recognised on the waves. :(

Might be going back there soon, hopefully with better results!

Ha ha. Speaking of Moroccan, I was invited back to dinner in San Francisco, before flying out that night, by a dude who was part of a group I'd been mountain biking with in Santa Cruz, anyway his wife cooked Moroccan food and it was delicious. The twist was down in Santa Cruz he had a girl friend, you know, double life kind of thing. God knows if she knew about the wife, and I guess the wife didn't know about the girlfriend either. His idea of a joke I guess, he never told me about any of this so I had to get through dinner conversation being very careful about what I said!!! I mean, you don't want to be a bad guest. Good food anyway.

After 5 days on the beach last month at the Novotel in Kuta, Lombok, fending off the local hawkers while I went and surfed Grupuk Bay, a fabric hawker came to my wife with a long face and the news, "Your husband has a second wife". After many protests, "No he doesn't, I'm his only wife", the hawker upped the ante, "No, he has a second wife, I've seen her!". Wife: "You've seen her?". "Yes, I've seen his second wife,---- it's his surfboard!!" Wife, "Oh no, your wrong, thats his first wife!" Uproarious laughter as a knowing, cross-cultural connection was made over the universally observed, hopeless addiction of the true surfer!

I am very lucky, my wife wants me to surf as I am happier when I do.

In fact, she had assumed this upcoming trip to Costa would be mostly surf safari. I said no, booked 5 star all inclusive resorts.

Will surf perhaps 1/3 the time, no biggy.

I buy new surf related warez when ever, no probs. Surf with what friends I got when ever I want, no probs, etc...

Struggling to commit to which 3 boards to take later...
1273

604 Flexfire and 510 Mini Driver are definitely coming. It's whether I take the 600 CBD, the 508 Spitfire or the 502 Sweet Potato.
My thinking is, having the Spitfire there would give me the most range, but the CBD is my favourite board and if the waves are right I'd rather be on that than anything. The Potato could offer a couple of real fun days out there but realistically it probably isn't necessary...

Wandi
11-19-2012, 02:09 AM
From my experience on any surf trip the favorite board is the first board to get packed
After that it would be an inbetweener for when conditions are marginal
And of course the trusty step up
But if your comfortable riding your Taj when the swell is up you could get away with not having a step up
I think I would leave the potato at home as well

prjwebb
11-19-2012, 02:24 AM
Yeah, last time I was there though I found my 602 Taj had a little too much rocker, especially in the tail for the points. The CBD feels like it is slightly relaxed though but it might be an optical illusion due to the increased rail thickness.
The Mini Driver feels like it's going to work really well there with the low exit rocker, extra width and quad option and I'm thinking the Taj could overlap with that board a lot and I wouldn't gain a lot having both. That said, having a back up incase one gets damaged isn't a bad idea...

FW - Fan
11-19-2012, 09:20 AM
First board I would pack is the MD...that think looks like it has enough range to suit most conditions. I too was stuck with either a SP or Spit when I went to indo as an "insurance" board but went with the Spit...I figured I would do something else to do if the surf was that bad that I neede the SP. Not sure if the waves their a super sucky...but if they are just typically good clean surf I would be going the FF again because its slightly more versatile than the TJ. Oh and by the way...you will probably only ride one anyway lol.

prjwebb
11-19-2012, 09:31 AM
Yeah the Taj is widened out and pretty versatile though.
I'm going 604R Flexfire for solid stuff, 600Q Taj/CBD for shoulder to overhead hollower or pockety stuff and 510 Mini Driver as an all rounder for chest to overhead slopey points or small hollow beachies if the swell vanishes.

Rusty

I am in the same boat as you prjwebb to many boards too choose from . Will be checking the long range forecast and make the call just before I leave will be their for most of Jan so expecting some solid swell at some point . Will be taking two all rounders a Stealth and a Fuego and will borrow a mates step up if required and will take a spitfire but I do not think it may even get wet . The last two times down their I may have required a grovel board maybe only for one or two days in total and the fuego can cover those days.

prjwebb
11-19-2012, 10:46 AM
Yeah I agree. In a month it's very likely you'll want a step up.
Last time I surfed the Spitfire quite a bit but that was in head high killers so could easily have been on another board.

Rusty
11-19-2012, 11:25 AM
I would say that guys who are heading down their with not much knowledge of the lineups and want to know what to take , think a little longer thicker boards why I say that is the waves are powerful but not often perfect , you need boards that can drive though the lumps and bumps take boards which you trust because you can take some heavy hits long hold downs so know your board . Indo boards may not suit thinner more refined boards for perfect conditions . Thats my take anyway

prjwebb
11-19-2012, 11:42 AM
Yeah I agree with all of that.

11-19-2012, 03:59 PM
When traveling I take the lightest, strongest most versatile boards I have, with a bit of overlap so one board can back up another if I break one. I try to get it down to 2 if that's possible. The weight is more manageable and doesn't make things so tight luggage wise with excess fees. My last trip I took my spitfire and it only had one or two outings and that was it and the HF would have sufficed anyway, in fact I change to it mid-session. I took 3 boards, 2 would have been easier. Hindsight!

Good photo of the area we surfed this day. The second to last day I was there. The next day was even bigger.
We pretty much went in, caught 1 or 2 waves each and them scrambled back in before we got annihilated. The tide was getting a bit high and waves were smashing into the cliffs and rocks so getting back out the water would have been impossible if we left it any longer.
Pumping though!
