Then I link up with a guy who tells me to forget those and try the HF, and takes me out and loans me his 700 out at Kaisers. Damn if that wasn't a blast! Good on the faces, good in the inside mush. I was impressed.

I rotate boards through my quiver till I finds board that works well and then it stays. I'm looking for some input on some of the other boards as to weather or not I'm gonna be missing something/how each of the others ride/surf/handle, or if that is the natural progression and this kind soul has saved me a few steps.

Hello

I am in my mid 40's and about 170#;
I've surfed short boards in my teens and twenties (Caribbean and Florida) for about 12 years, then took a hiatus of about 15 year (moved up north) and about a year ago I got back into it, restarted surfing with long boards (and wetsuits in the cold north east)

While on Costa Rica this past winter I surfed my friends sweet potato in (5' 4" rf) and after 2 rides I was convinced to come back to the short boards; They remind me of carving with skateboards... and the good old times;

So I bought a 5' 5" baked, and I've been out twice with it (with the thick rubber on) but I am struggling popping up with it.
I do catch the wave but it takes me too long to come up, I find myself on one or both knees a lot, and if I hurry it more, I come up off center and everything goes hey wire.
I was not having this issues with the 5' 4" (without a wetsuit) and I was taking off really late in costa rica.

I then switched to a long board for a couple of hours and was popping up easily and with no issues.

What gives?

I do realize on a long board I probably use by toes while on the short board knees are on the tail....

Any suggestions? I have been practicing on dry land on a 5' 5" rubber matt just to be sure I have the movement (from the knees) learned.

I currently ride a 9' longboard and I really want to get on something shorter and more high performance. I am 6'1" 160 lbs and looking at the dominator. The firewire volume calculator recommends a 6'2" dominator. I hope this board would work for all around small summer to head high winter swell.
Would this be the best size for me?

Hi all. I guess my title says it all. I've been surfing on and off for about 3 years now. I've had quite a long lull when I moved to the UK and have recently tried getting back into it over here in the east coast (NY).
I previously rode a 9' longboard then shifted to a funboard (7'2 bonga Perkins by south point)...after which my almost 1 year lull began.
I've thought of shifting to a shorter board since I've started. I got a cheap board over Craigslist and have had some rides on it. It's a 6'3" x 20 1/4 (i think) 7s super fish. Sadly my wave count is by far not where I want it to be. On top o that my board is chipping away.
Hence the thought of getting a new board. I was initially thinking of the potatonator but have been having doubts I I can handle it given my current skill level. I'm hoping I don't have to revert back to a mini mal or longboard.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
I'm 5'5" 72 kg (but working on getting to 66-68kg). I usually ride knee to waist with occasional shoulder high waves.

Again thanks for reading n sharing your input

I've heard a lot of good things about the Dominator and am ready to move down - currently riding a Ward Coffey 6'2" x 20.5" x 2.5" and a 9:Fish Clownfish 5'4" x 21" x 3" in San Diego. I'm 110 lb and 47.5 year old. My age is between categories on the volume calculator and my fitness is better than average but not top notch, so I'm getting a wide variety of volume #s and board recommendations. Taking my best guess, I'm leaning toward the Grom series 5' 4" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/4" volume 25.7. Would that be a good choice? And would you recommend the Dominator over the Spitfire?

I got my new Dom 6'2" with the SF4 quad fins last year and I really love the board (only used it for one trip to Morocco in January though..)!

As I will be travelling this summer and surf (hopefully) a lot of different breaks and types of waves, I'm looking to buy a new set of fins that I can use on the boards I rent and on my Dominator when I'll be surfing on that board later.

So, I've been looking at a lot of different FCS fins but find it hard to decide which one is the right for me.. I do not have very much expericene with different boards and fins, so it is maybe a bit difficult for me to describe what I'm looking for, but I'll try:

I'm 84 kg (185 lbs), 25 year old and beginner-intermediate surfer. I can go down the line and do bottom turns, but really no critical manouvers. I will be surfing my Dominator back in Norway from small to maximum overhead size. I will also go on surf trips to Morocco and Portugal every now and then, and this summer I will go to Indonesia where I will most likely rent or buy a board as similar to the dominator as possible (size, volume, wave catching abilities). I want the fins to produce a lot of speed so I can make sections easier. I also like the "loose" feeling of my Dom (with SF4 quad) compared to my old M7's thruster. So in general I want a fin setup that can be used in a lot of conditions and for hybrids and shortboards. I will need it to be a thruster setup (or a 5 fin tri-quad setup).

So far I've been looking at these sets:
- FCS G-AM (PC or glass flex) thruster
- FCS GMB (thruster or 5-fin)
- FCS SF4 PC (5 fin tri/quad)

The SF4 PC (in yellow) 5 fin setup is very appealing since it can be used as both a thruster and quad, they look very good and I also like the old ones in glass flex on my Dom (even though I have very little to compare with). I can also pick them up for $119 which I think is a good deal.

Any suggestions or comments? Thanks!

I'm new to the site and would really like to ask what your thoughts would be on what would be best in regards to size and board. I'm thinking either the Dom or Spit for my go to board for anything 2ft+ 90% beach breaks. I currently have a JS Peer Pony 5'8 which is really fun for the small days but trying to get an edge once it gets to about 3ft plus is challenging so i just need one more board for the quiver. I'm a northern beaches local and i'm 5'10 and 86kgs intermediate surfer with good fitness?

Designer Dan Mann explains, “The UNIBROW has roots in a design I've been riding as my regular short board, mixed with what I've learned from designing and riding the Dominator, Sweet Potato and Potato-Nator. The outline curve is compressed from a regular shortboard without sacrificing the width needed to maximize paddling and planing speed.

The goal was to design a very high-performance shortboard that didn't feel too ‘bulky’ in good surf when you can ride something other than a groveler. The rail profile is dropped and very sensitive, especially through the tail. The bottom has an aggressive single concave that starts in the nose, carries through the deep spot forward of the fins and splits into a subtle double concave that then directs the water flow to the inside of the front fins”.

Hello all,

I've had a 6'3 activator for about a month and wanted to share my experiences on this board. Overall I think it's a great board and although expensive, was worth every penny! I bought the Rapidfire model, and using a thruster setup (flexfire clay marzo's). I'm a 165 lb rider, intermediate skill, and maybe should have gone smaller since this board floats much more than my 6'3 shortboard, and I had a little trouble duckdiving it at first.

The first thing that stuck out was how easy it was to paddle this thing, I felt like I was flying on the water compared to my other shortboards, and it made me wonder if I was going to small on my boards all along. I'd usually never be the fastest in the lineup, and so would never wait in position for the sets because the stronger paddlers would usually win position over me. Now? It seems like I can more than hang with those guys, only longboarders seem to catch waves further back than me. Honestly it feels like cheating haha.

In smaller waves, this board is plenty fun. Because of how easy it is to paddle, I scratched the idea of buying a longboard for small surf. 1-3ft faces, still rideable. Had a few fun days at rockpiles when the waves were just waist high. Paddles fast and you can whip this board like a shortboard, it's quickly become my main surfboard in nearly all conditions. It handled surprisingly well on the North Shore. The board seems to be perfect for breaks like laniakea where the takeoff isn't super critical. Steep drops are still possible, I've surfed v-land, rocky point, and gas chambers with no problem, but Pupukea was a bit different, ate it on a couple takeoffs on the waves that were breaking close to the sandbar (near air-drops and double ups). For breaks like that, I would probably be better suited to riding my old shortboard, but for most conditions, the Activator became my weapon of choice. I'd give it a 9/10 :)
