  • New Potatonator and Baked on the way

Just got my new 6.0 Potatonator and got to say this is a great board. Unfortunately the surf has been lacking to put it through it's paces properly, but have it out in 1-2ft mushy waves better suited to the Baked Potato but murphy's law I have to wait for the next shipment to arrive so I can take delivery. This board paddles like a train and turns on a dime, Thanks Raz at Firewire for recommending I try one. The plan is the Potatonator will be my go to board for 2- 6' waves and the Baked is my 1-4' mushy full waves and as a change up for some fun. I'm running a quad set of Mayhems in my Potatonator and I've also got a set of Indo SF4's on order and a set of Indo Controllers for my Baked.

When I demo'd a 5'5" Baked I found it caught wave easier than the sweet and was really loose but just a tad under baked (excuse the pun) on volume. Can't wait to get them both in to some better waves. Stoked!! Will try post a pic as well

Yew!!! nice setup there!!!.Enjoy that thing, it's a great board!!, sticks to anything and everything. One thing though, if you have a chance try it as a quad, she works insanely that way

Ok I've finally got to put the PN through it's paces all be it in 2ft with the odd 3ft sets. First thing I have to say is this is a wave catching machine and paddles in early and with speed although it can still handle the late drop. It is responsive and has plenty of drive and great pivot with the Mayhems. I have to say for some reason I am surfing the best I ever have on my backhand on this board which just adds more to the wave count. Can't wait to get back out and dial it in some more.

I have just sold my 7'2" Addvance and am looking to downsize a little for something suited to small 2-4' east coast of NZ beach break surf.
I surf only in the summer and get out 1 or 2 times a weed during the season.
I am 55, 89kg, and of average fitness. I would consider myself an intermediate surfer now.
What would be the best board for the conditions, it really gets hollow so you need something that is inherently fast for the flat spots. Would a smaller Addvance, Sweet Potato, Baked Potato or a Potatonator be the best option?
            Any feedback would be appreciated.

All the potato family are sort of flat rockered boards which will not excel on hollow conditions as well as lets say a hellfire. Still a hybrid covering a wide array of conditions but closer to a shortboard (pulled in nose, more rocker).
The smaller Addvance will be another option to consider taking into consideration the frequency at which you go surf and the fitness level you are providing here
              Hope this helps

Hey buddy, I would really recommend a smaller Addvance for you. 6'10 or even 6'6 if you feel up for it. An Addvance will cover all conditions whereas any of the Tator family will be a bit restricted if it gets hollow. An Addvance is a 1 board quiver. I'm looking for a 6'6 ADDvance to complement my 6'10 for an upcoming OS trip. Yeeeewwwwwwww.

                  Whoops!

I led you astray there I wrote really hollow but meant rarely, in other words the surf is not very powerful. I am not paddle fit but in the type of surf I experience most of the time this is not an issue. I have always liked short wider boards but I am concerned that the SP is quite a specialised board to surf...the baked potato and the potatonator look a good compromise between the wide area toward the back but a slightly pulled in nose. I found the addvance quite wide in the nose and pulled in at the tail which is good for cruisy surfing or learning but lacks a bit of speed and the ability to move the board around alot in smaller waves.

Sweet! I just got a 5'8" PN in the white RapidFire and I honestly think that's the best looking Firewire out there. I'd be interested to see how you alternate between the Baked and PN, as that's the same route I'm looking to take when I get the funds. My biggest concern is that I'll find they overlap too much and I don't surf one or the other, and I would have been better off with a Baked and a Spit or something.

The BP and PN do overlap. So does the PN and Spit haha. If you have enough money for only one board, i would recommend the PNator. If you have more money, BP and Spit or Hellfire would be good. :D

                          ALOHA!!
