I have very similar looking cracks and bruises too, but I can relate each one to a fall where I have knocked the rail with my knee or arm or head... mine have not showed any signs of water take on though. I repair them as soon as I get them by sanding down the areal and putting a coat of epoxy on them.

I still get a few of these on my FST boards but no where near as many

yeah, the first one I noticed was a few months ago was a 602 FST. I just assumed they were on new ones now and did not look carefully at the others. I guess the shop may have had a custom on the rack - it did have the dominator sticker on it though.

I have seen FST dominators without the vent in the shop, even though they used to have a vent.

The vent in my alternator annoyed me so much that I paid the repair guy $40 to remove it (even though it had no actual issues). Looks much better now. :)

Finally got to test out the BP on sunday and loved it. Even though smaller than my SP it seemed to paddle and catch waves just as easily. It generally feels smoother to ride than the sp and I did not have the same nose dive issues I often found. It turns a tighter radius than my SP did and I was able to do a few figure 8s on the tiniest waves (about knee- waist). The board had plenty of float for me (hovering around 92 atm). I maybe could have even gone the 5'5 but that would have been a bit weird having it the same volume as my ALT.

    hey PRJ,
what do you mean by "polish". I use 800 sandpaper to finish but its still not as smooth as the original finish. how do you polish a surfboard?

I am enjoying my nub on and off on my spitfire. I am riding with MF1 fronts and SXQ rears(shapers version of gxq). Without the Knub I find this set up super fast and fun.
With the nub the board definitely feels slower and a bit draggy, especially noticeable in fat waves. In powerful waves though I really like the feeling through top turns, it sort of helps you push back into the wave faster. While slower than just the quad it is still and looser and faster than a thruster. I will keep using the nub in preference over the thruster for more powerful waves on the spitfire in future

I find the RF decks wear better than the FST Decks. my FST decks immediately get little knee dents, toe drag marks and bigger foot wells, looks like hail damage. (you can tell how bad my pop is). my RF decks just get slight foot wells.

the rails and bottom are a different story though. for that you can beat FST.

As far as weight goes, I had a 508 sp in FST and RF. The FST was a whole 500gms heavier than the RF. For me this created too much of a performance issue in small surf. I think there may be some variation between individual boards though because my other FST boards are very light.

I am guessing there is a good chance the two whites will yellow at a slightly different rates. do you think after a bit of age these things will become Two Tone?

Hey Sc. Print was from factory. Perfect BP test ride waves today ,but, Have not tried BP yet. I am stuck on my own with kids for the weekend so I just have to watch instead.

I am hoping the BP will give me a bit more drive and a bit less catching on the front rail. I was fairly happy with the SP, just found it a touch too big and clumsy.

I recon RF is the way to go for small wave board anyway. Having to fix a few dings is worth it for the extra performance. I just ordered a 5'7

I am thinking similar to you.. lately whenever i ride the alternator it feels so slow compared to my spit. This means I end up just riding my spit all the time, problem is when its hollow I really want some more rocker and less tail(which is why I brought the alt in the first place). I figure if I sell my alt and replace it with a 604 HF it would get more use.

If you have a van with a bed, then make a space for your boards under your bed. I do this, and because I am paranoid I have often left a theromometer under the bed to measure max heat throughout the day. On the hottest summer, full sunny day while I was at work the most it got up to was 35c. In the front of the car it was 50+. I leave my whole quiver in the van all the time so I am always ready for a sneaky surf.

I should note that the side windows are blacked out which also helps a bit

Not sure if this is the right forum for Kneeboarding, but I saw the Sweet Potato and said that's my ideal small wave Kneeboard (with a few tweaks).
I normally ride my Friar Tuck (Parkes) board but was looking for something "out-there" , utilisiing that great double concave V and volume of the SP.

A fun board for the crappy waves that usually exist around most of the time here in Perth. I bought the 5'8" Sweet Potato refinned it so that two new forward fins where replugged at about an inch gap. This board went well, really fast but was too narrow(22 1/4") and stability an issue and I found and unfortunately kept on catching the rail. It more than likely a riding style not yet adapted to this board.

I saw another kneeboarder riding similar SP and ripping but with original fin pattern. Anyway SOLD the SP it and bought the 5'11" BP wider at 22 5/8" more volume. I think this will work a lot better but have yet to surf it.

With this 5 fin board I have more options to experiment, Ill replug for forward fins and put central fin box in to allow more forward centre fin or just put a huge SUP fin in for the old school single fin style.

Is there any Kneeboarders out there using the SP or BP and your experiences asAttachment Attachment Attachment Attachment I would keen to know?

  • do you bother to fix tiny water tight de lams on RF ?

    Hi guys,

I notice that on the RF boards I have owned that little delams occur from the slightest bump. When I say delam I mean there is no visible damage to the glass, it just has come away from the bamboo in the little spot where it was bumped. You can just see it as a cloudy discolourment. It usually happens around the rails where the black line is on the edge of the bamboo, normally from a light bump with a knee or elbow or leggie.

Id imagine that to fix little delams like this would be quite hard and involve removing glass that is not at all damaged. Does any one bother fixing these?

I am also loving indo controllers on my SP.

Has any one else noticed a humming sound when speeding straight through a more hollow section? does that mean its dragging? My MRTFX did this too, but when going a bit slower. I never noticed this with my PC7s, indo controllers are my fav anyway.

Did not know about these ceramic ones :(. when I got mine the shop keeper said they were the stiffest powerbase fins u could get. I'll have to find them and give them a try, because for me if they were a bit stiffer they would be perfect.

I have been riding Dxl aromour flex thruster set in my spit and my alt for a few months now and here is what I found:

    - they are fast and loose
    - they carve beautifully
    - board connection is so much firmer than FCS, they feel so solid. Only downside is they did leave some marks on the board where they overhang the FCS plugs. I would be wary about putting them on a RF board.
-I personally found them to be too flexable, I wish they made some stiffer ones, I think their material may be limited as it has to be flexy enough to fan out when screwed in. I had them give way a few times in more holllow waves and went back to my old fins.

I am keen to give these indo controlers a go as well, I am still not totally satisfied with my SP fins. Do you know if the indo controlers would be large enough for a bug guy(96kg) on a 508?

    Hi Jon,
I owned a RF for 2 months, then replaced it with an FST, then went back to RF as soon as possible ( 1 month) due to lack of performance in smaller waves. For me The FST went ok in bigger waves but was majorly lacking in accelaration and general livelyness in smaller, Knee to waist, high waves. When I got my RF back it was everything I expected.

My other boards are FST and I am completely happy with them. For me the potato is about small surf and I think the extra weight of the FST potato that I owned is not good in this area.

Weight does include a normal tail pad - about 70g.

Fins and wax are not included.

I have had one of each in 508. I reguarly weigh my boards so I can tell how much water they might be taking on if i ding them. Also good for early warning with things like little cracks around the fin boxes that you would not otherwise notice.

I think each individual board may be different, but here is what my ones weighed.(weight includes tail pad)
Sweet Potato FST 508. No Fins, No wax 3.777.
Sweet Potato RF 508. No Fins, No wax 3.267

Got some Powerbase armourplate DXLs form the surf shop- less than half the price of Mf-1s so definetly worth a try. I had to file the Tabs down to get them to fit properly in the fusion plugs, but now they are nice and snug.
I notice the power base plugs are very long. With the fusion plugs the fin sticks out a few cm in front and behind the plug - pushing straght down onto the board - It should be ok on FST but I definetly would not trust this on a Rapidfire board.

The forcast swell did not arrive so I have not had a go on them yet... but they look good.

Hey PRJ - can you put powerbase fins into the FCS plugs on firewires? The powerbase website says you should only use powrbase plugs. -

Anyway, I am in Oz and the Mf-1s are in all the shops. They look good but a bit pricey(150).

MF-1s on Alternator - anyone used them?

Hello, I am up for some new fins on my fairly new 606 alternator. I have read heaps of commercial propaganda on how good the MF 1s are but have not seen any reviews from normal surfers. any one used them with an Alt?

    Thanks
