I have only ridden it a couple of times, it is very fast. Unreal for big cutbacks on fat waves, floats over the whitewash easily. Really need your feet in the right spot to make board go good. A couple of inches of foot placement is the difference between flying and failing.

So fat and short or tall and thin?

Womens opinions vary on this matter. (Opps sorry wrong forum.)

On the new volume calculator I type in:

    Int/Adv (true)
    Ave fitness (true)
35 years (-8 years i'm 43 but seems to work.45 years comes up with 36-45 which seems just a bit to much.)
    89 KGs (true)

and it comes up with 32-39 ltrs.

    My boards are:
    6'6 FF vol 32 (have)
    6'2 HF vol 33.7 (want)
    6'0 DOM vol 34.8 (have)
    5'10 PN vol 36.8 (want)
    5'6 SP vol 38.6 (have)

So this seems to work for me with my high performance boards at the lower end of the scale, my hybrids mid scale and my sweet potato high end of the scale. Even though I tweaked it a bit I still think it gives a good range between all my boards. So I think if you find a board you like whether it is high performance, hybrid or pure stoke you can use the volume range to find other boards the right size/volume for you. High performance=min. Pure stoke =Max.

Try a Dominator 5'10 to 6'0. This board catches waves easy. I don't think you need anywhere near 42L of float but.

I started riding firewires 6-7 months ago, I now have 3 (a Flexfire, Dominator and recently a Sweet Potato) and thinking of getting a 6'2 Hellfire. I love these boards and they each suit a particular type of wave from ankle high to double overhead. I have had no problems with any of the boards, not even a ding or depression.(even after running into another surfers board who dropped in on me in on a 6-8 foot face wave.He was too slow ha ha.)
My friends have had different brand(not firewire) new boards and had depressions in them after one or two surfs.
I can understand people being upset if something happens to their board (new or otherwise) but to bag out the whole company is a bit much especially considering the number of boards of ALL BRANDS that break or have problems worldwide as compared to firewire boards.
Maybe because firewire have a Forum (which to me is a good help and a benefit. A positive thing as can be seen from 99% of the comments here) it is easier for people with a problem to vent their frustrations than it would be for people with other brand boards.
People who don't like firewires don't have to buy them, I am sure there will be plenty of others that do like them. I for one will keep buying them and I don't think I will buy any other brand from now on.

I was going to get a 6' Hellfire but as I seem to be staying at 88-89Kg instead of dropping to 84-85Kg I think I will go with a 6'2 Hellfire. I have a 6' Dom which I love in smaller waves up to head high (just got some Simon thruster fins, Large size. The larger fin (used to have G5's) seem to make my board go better.) I also have a 6'6 flexfire for extra big days (12-16 foot faces, any bigger these days I probably wouldn't go out unless perfect. Not fit enough.)
I think the 6'2 Hellfire would fill in the gap (Head high to 12 faces) nicely. I also think the extra 2" would help me paddle a bit better as I get a bit older (not necessarily wiser).

I really like the deviant fin on my backhand, it seems easier to bottom turn and hit the lip (maybe it is just phsycological but if you believe its true then it is true). My Dominator goes good as both a quad and a deviant thruster setup.

I should get some bigger fins (7's) but I am to lazy/tight to buy some. I might search on ebay and see what happens. Do you think they would make much difference to the G5's?

    started a topic Deviant Fin

    Deviant Fin

I have been riding my 6'0 Dom as a quad and it has been going very good but after reading about the deviant fin decided to give it a go. I have G5 fins in my board and with the deviant in my board seems very fast and loose.(maybe that is just the Dom.) I also have a 6'6 flexfire (2nd hand) that I have had for 2 months but have not ridden yet. Today there was a good swell at the local left hand point (8-12ft faces) (I'm a natural footer) I put in the G5 fins and deviant and was stoked at the way my flexfire went. I could drive off the bottom and turn off the top with power and speed and cutback with a foam bounce very smooth and fast.(Hope the swell stays around) All in all very happy with the deviant.( and my 2 firewires, maybe just need a 6'0 Hellfire and I will have all bases covered, oh and maybe a 5'5 baked potato as well.)

On a side note I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the FCS G series fin and the FCS M series fin. I have both but have only used the G5 so far as it seems to go pretty good. I also hace a set of FG3's but as I'm 87kg I though they might be a little small for my boards as the 5's don't feel too big, especially as I will only be riding the flexfire in overhead + waves and my Dom seems to like a bigger fin.

I just ordered the knubster on ebay ($25 including postage) to try on my 6' Dom (goes good without it but I'll give it a go) then was reading the old forum ( hours of good reading there) when I read about the deviant fin for the thruster. Do these fins go any good? Where do you get them from and how much do they cost? I might get one and give it a go. What fins would go with it? I have G5's at the moment on my board. I also have M3s and FG-3s available from other boards. Would any of these go OK with the deviant fin?

    Cheers.

No worries, I'm happy with them no matter what the age. First time I have ever ridden a board the same size as me (Dominator) can't believe how easy it catches waves. I have only ridden it as a quad so far but it goes so good I don't think I will even bother trying it as a thruster (maybe one day).

started a topic How old are my boards?

    How old are my boards?

I have just brought a couple of firewires, a 6'0 Dominator and a 6'6 Flexfire (2nd hand and cheap). I was wondering if you can tell how old the board is (not that important, just curious) by the details on the side of the board?

    Details are:
    FDM-600 R - 6'0"x20 1/2x2 1/2-00 #43818-1

    FE-606 Q 6'6x19 1/4x2 1/2 #37647

I have only ridden the Dominator so far, in waves from 2' to 10' faces. It goes very well, especially in 3' to 6' faces.(Left Flexfire at home on 7' to 10' face day as I didn't think it would be that big.) The Dominator still went good on the bigger day but it would of been good to try out the Flexfire. I am very happy with my boards and will be definitely buying Firewires from now on. I have ridden a 5'8 Sweet Potato demo(didn't have a 5'6) and couldn't believe how good it went in 1' to 3' face surf. Definitely on my wish list. Also am thinking of a 6'0 or 6'2 Hellfire when money permits.
I have a 6'4 Byrne HP Tufflite in my garage that goes well but I think it will be getting dusty as I will be riding the firewires (especially the Dominator) from now on.

    Cheers.

    6'0, 85-88kg, 42 years old. Surfing for 25+ years.
6'0 Dominator FST, 6'6 Flexfire FST
