I rode a quad in my mini driver for a long time and loved it, and since the unibrow is similar (but not the same) I can't see it being bad as a quad. Get one of the 5 fin sets or a thruster set and a pair of quad rears so you can test both out. For someone your weight I'd try the fcs MF-1 and if you ride it as a quad the g-1000 rears (those would be the rears from the mayhem or k2.1 quad set) you can order those individually through your local shop. Or you could try smaller rears for a looser feeling but I liked the mf-1 with the mayhem rears.

Hawaii, I'm on the same boat as you as far as preferring fst! I thought I momentarily saw that you could custom order a baked potato in fst but it is not up anymore. What a tease for you guys who ride them! I have been thinking about one but I have a 5'10" dominator that floats me too much at 170lbs that serves a similar purpose. I even had my local ding repair guy put in a longboard center fin box so I can ride it as a single fin because I mostly ride it as a quad anyways. For those of us that are still crazy about the fst maybe we could put a layer of 4oz on the deck of the timber tek to make it a tad more durable and still weigh maybe as much or a bit less than the fst. I can't imagine that being problematic because the timber tek is already water tight and the deck and bottom are not completely smooth so I feel like the resin and glass would adhere. Ideally I think a board with the timber tek paulownia deck and rails and the white fst bottom skin all sandwiched together would be the best board ever in terms of weight, durability, flex, and not to mention looks. I'm hoping someone from firewire reads this and makes my dreams come true haha.

I understand that hawaii_boi haha I have one of the ones in white rapidfire but I love my fst boards so I would definitely buy one in fst when they come out. I was hoping that someone with the inside scoop would possibly drop a date for fst or somewhere close to when it will come out or confirm if it is happening or not. Maybe Chris knows?

So does this mean that there will not be a vanguard in fst?

It is funny that people are suggesting the MF-1 or the MB fins because I personally use the MF-1 fronts and the MB rears in a quad setup in my mini driver and I won't ride it with any other fin setup! I weigh about 80 kg maybe a bit lighter and find that this combo goes well in all kinds of surf. If you are heavier than 80 kg I imagine that this combo will pivot well and offer a lot of speed as well as a good amount of hold.

Chris how can I pre order a 5'6 vanguard? Can you help me get one at surfride in solana beach? I will be picking up a michel bourez model there on Sunday hopefully. When is the soonest I could be picking up a 5'6 vanguard?

Thanks for the advice man! I think I'm going to go with the vanguard. My question now is that at 175-180 lbs I have been riding boards of 27.8 volume and my Michel Bourez will be 27.7 is it bad to have the 5'6 vanguard be a liter more than my current boards? The step down in volume from the 5'6 to the 5'4 is huge though the 5'4 is 25.9L which I don't think will float me well. I know you can ride this board at a smaller volume but it seems REALLY low AND outside my recommended range. As where the 5'6 falls inside my recommended range but towards the top because I should be riding boards between 27-29L. Any thoughts on this conundrum?

I have heard that the vanguard requires similar rider input but feels very different from a regular board, in most cases in a good way. That being said some people who ride say it feels awkward when they go back to riding their regular short board. This is the primary reason I am timid because while it might allow me to take my performance abilities to the next level I feel like the way I ride the vanguard and the style or quality of the maneuvers I can pull on that board to may not transfer to my "regular shortboard" surfing. I feel like my dominator, mini driver, and michel bourez cover an array of conditions up to 8-10 ft even 12ft (I have done it with the mini driver) and this board is between the performance hybrid squash tail like the sub scorcher for smaller or more lackluster beach breaks than where I usually surf (blacks beach) or an experimental shape like the vanguard that will feel different from normal (this could be bad?). I am torn because this fourth board is not completely necessary, it is just replacing the stealth which overlaps the mini driver too much and doesn't work as well in the steeper waves that I am used to. I have this idea that a four board quiver is great because you can have a small wave board (5'10 Dom), an everyday board (5'10 mini driver), a backup of your everyday board (soon to be sold stealth, or michel bourez), and lastly a board for the best days (michel bourez, or the mini driver depending on the wave). So I guess I am trying to replace the backup everyday board and my predicament is that supposedly both boards would do a good job of it.

    Vanguard vs sub scorcher

I am debating on picking up either a 5'6 vanguard or a 5'10 sub scorcher to replace my 5'10 stealth. I am going to be picking up a michel bourez 6'0 thin this upcoming Sunday and already have a 5'10 mini driver and a 5'10 dominator that is too big for me but great for small days and I had it converted to a single fin as well. The only thing that worries me about the vanguard is that it will screw up my regular short boarding because it is so different. At 5'6 the vanguard will have higher volume than my stealth and the MD and MB. I'm hoping that it will grovel on 3 foot waves but extend the range that the sub scorcher would otherwise lose some performance in. Any advice would be welcome.

I had joe roper in San Diego put a single fin in my 5'10 Dom and it is really fun! He put the single fin box straight through the center of the fcs fusion plug and he said that would give it added strength. He charged me like 65 bucks for it.

I can't figure out how to post a pic to the forum off my iPad but I think I will drop by the factory this afternoon. Where is it exactly and what is the address/hours they are open? Thanks so much for the help Iggy! Lovin this forum!

Iggy thanks for the response. The wood does not look cracked but you can feel a dent in the foam that makes it seem like there was never a balsa rail there. Certainly not 12 mm thick. I am certainly not questioning the durability or construction of the board but I probably fractured a complete small segment of the rail and it is bashed into the foam. But as of now I can push on a three inch section of the rail and make it go from rounded to flat like folding a rolled up newspaper flat. I will be getting it professionally repaired but I was wondering if the FireWire factory in San Diego will repair it or wherever they refer San Diego people to because ding king does not replace the balsa rail. Which not only would possibly effect the flex of the board but it would make my beautiful fst board have a white spot on the rail. Again if this ding happened to a standard PU it would be a goner but I am just trying to find out what is wrong with the board now.

    Damaged rail on stealth

Hi FireWire guys this is my first time on this forum so I'll start by saying I love your product and don't want to ride anything else! unfortunately I was surfing blacks beach yesterday and lost my footing after pulling into a barrel on a big set wave and dinged the rail of my stealthright on my hard head. If it was a standard PU board it would have been obliterated but my fst initially only looked like it had spider cracks on the rail. However when I sanded it down to fill the cracks with solarez I noticed that I could push the balsa wood rail in with my thumb about a quarter inch. I had a few questions that I know you guys can answer for me.
    1. So I can push in the rail with my finger and was wondering how thick the balsa parabolic stringer is because it feels pretty thin more like a veneer layer than a thick stringer. Perhaps I dented the whole rail inwards and am pushing in the outermost layer of it or just the glass. So how thick is the balsa wood parabolic stringer?
    2. I contacted ding king about a repair but they do not replace the wood along the rail is there a shop near San Diego that will fix it as close to exactly the way it was? I know you guys have the factory and I tried to call the following numbers 17608930782 6192660304 and 6197040808 but wasn't able to contact anyone and the two 619 numbers said they were no longer in service. No worries you guys are probably out enjoying this great swell just like me!
No other surfboard company has a forum like this or even close to your level of customer service, so I know you guys will be nothing but extraordinary in your process of helping me resolve this small issue.
    Thank you for your consideration,
    Ned
