    Yo stoop,

Im shorter and chunkier than you at around 5'7 and 70kg i recently bought a 5'9 chedda (27L) and feel this is the perfect volume for me to have it as an all rounder performance hybrid.

Pretty impressed with how well it goes in the smaller stuff (flat nose rocker really comes into its own!) and never feels too corky but i supppose its all gonna be about sacrifice and how low do you wanna go?!

Youv got a bit more length to you though which i suppose has to be considered too... hope thats helped a bit!

    Thanks hawaii!

Very helpful! I have a feeling the 501 is the way to go really. It may take a bit of getting used to but in the long run will be so so fun i reckon, and the 503 did still sit right on top of the water... Basically what i was trying to work out is will the design make up for the 1-2L less volume but i think you have answered this! aloha bro!

Yo kiteboarder, im 5'7 and about 70kgs about 155lbs?!?! My 508 spitfire was too big, i learnt loads on it and it went great in the small stuff but i think i wouldve been happier on a 506 or even (pushing it) a 504...

I felt like i couldve gone smaller on the CC maybe 508 but dont want to sacrifice wave catching and it definitely didnt feel corky... Great board!!!

If you like a bit more float i reckon a 510/511 would be good for you depending on what you want it for....

    Cheers pm,

i demoed a 5'9 c chedda and i loved it, they offered me the as new demo board for a sweet price so im gonna go with that! surfed it in pretty hollow and punchy 4ft and it went great, i suppose for anythign more id get a true step up but i loved the relatively mellow nose rocker and bottom contours into a whippy little tail on this board!

still havent tried a hf or md but they look sweet too, so many sick boards!

What kind of volume do you ride for more perfomancy short boards? I felt like around 27L was perfect with the chubby chedda for me but maybe a bit less for a true step up... Im gonna have to try the 501 i totally agree about getting a better pump out of a smaller more movey board! I feel like this essentially comes from being able to get the rails in more rather than the entire bpard sitting on top of the water if that makes sense?!

Yeah i always have this little thought in my head that i should keep the volume up for if i go back to the uk... stupid really as id more likely sell the boards...

Im just gonna have to try out a 501 i think! But i really dont want to sacrifice wave catching as this will be my small wave board... 0-2ft and hopefully something i can take out and have fun on in the tiniest conditions...

Im feeling brave about downsizing though after going from 31 to 27.5L and not feeling much loss in wave catching ability between spit and CC...

Shame firewire in currumbin arent open weekends!!!!

Hey mate the unibrow looks sweet. Have you had a look at the chubby chedda? I went from a 508spit to a 509 chubby chedda (you would go a bit smaller) and i loved it! I reckon you could even get away with going quite a lot shorter... I was suprised with the CC how well it caught waves and its 27.5L (im 70kg 5'7)... If you can a board test is the way to go! It really is all about finding that swet spot volume for your size and for the type/size of waves you are gonna use the board for... If youv got the dom for when its tiny mush why not try and down volume a bit for your step up? 508 unibrow or 508 chubby chedda?!?!

    Thanks for the reply...

I had the 501 in mind originally. Then i went out on the 503 and first few attempts at paddling in i was thinking " i KNEW it these things are TOO SMALL" haha. anyway after a little positional rethink i got the thing paddling super nice and was getting into tons of tiny waves... But them that made me think why not the 501?!

I think maybe some time on my chubby chedda (27.5L) will help with the decision...

Also im hoping that firewire in currumbin have a 501 i can demo, ideally in timbertek!

    started a topic 501 0r 503 Baked Potato

    501 0r 503 Baked Potato

    Im 70-71kgs 5'7...

I demoed a 503 (wanted to try a 501 but 503 was the smallest) and once id found the balance point for paddling i was getting into loads of small slightly mushy waves...

Had great fun, this board is SO FAST and it turns so tight its unreal the frist few fast turns nearly threw me off i wasnt expecting it to drive and whip round on rail so hard, what a buzz!

So im pretty sure im gonna get one as my small wave board 2-3ft and under to as small as possible hopefully! Il have a 509 chubby chedda for 2ft plus i suppose at 2ft itl be a toss up between the two decided by wave quality...

So i cant decide if the 503 is right or i should go 501... Any help? Hopefully i can demo a 501 some time and see for myself...

Surfed the 503 in my 2mm wetty but i suppose the baked would be for the summer mostly...

Not sure about different board availability in the uk... Since my last post i demoed a 5'9 chubby chedda and i loved it...

The 5'9s 27L and im 5'7 and 70-71kg but stepping down from my 5'8 SF (31L) i was amazed at how well it still caught waves. Its toted as a small wave board and you can tell from the way it paddles and catches, the bottom contours arent too aggressive and the nose rocker is fairly flat, its got a really nicely refined tail tho and a fair bit of tail rocker. I fund this meant i could catch anythign and if needs be put my weight back and use that til rocker to deal with steep sections and tight turning.

Anyway i returned it and turns out they have 2 demo boards in that size so im gonna buy the newer of the two off them, pretty stoked just wish id handed over the cash straight away!

Since have sold my spitfire, sad to see it go... but i demoed a 5'3 baked potato and that was awesome so il end up getting one of those for small waves...

Wait for that swell to roll in and give the chedda a chance!!!

Loved it. The surf was a little smaller but still good today 2-3 occasional 4fters nice and clean and got hollow and sucky as the tide dropped off...

The 5'9 chub was nearly as easy to catch waves on as my 5'8 spit... I was really suprised with its ability to catch small waves...

It definitely wasnt as fast in flat sections and fatter waves but plenty fast enough and more importantly when it walled up and got fast/steep it just held so SO much better, felt like it didnt sit as high and could get a rail in way better but then at speed it had plenty of lift and drive...

Also the difference riding FST compared to rapidfire is very palpable, the rapidfire is so rigid and clattery, great when its small but the flex and dampening effect of the FST is awesome in comparison especially in critical drop ins and bottom turns and when theres a little chop to slice thrpough....

I thought maybe with steep drop ins the fairly flat nose rocker would be a bit of a pain... But the genius of this board is in the thin tail with a whippy rocker... Youv got the paddle power and catching ability of a flatter board which you can get your weight forward in flat sections and outrunning the foamball then when you need it you shift the weight back and theres all the rocker you need! Lovely for drivey bottom turns and getting lift for floaters!!! What a great shape!!!

Got a sick barrel and it wedged up and closed out on me but i didnt care i was just frothin so hard... pretty sure im gonna buy one but i still kinda want to try out a 5'8 hellfire...

Looked at one in a shop and it has a fair bit more double concave and nose rocker but a flatter tail....

Anyone got anymore input comparing hellfire and chubby chedda?

    Cheers

    Hey guys and gals.

I posted a while ago in the BP and HF forums trying to work out what boards and sizes to move on to from my 508 spitfire.

Iv still been riding this board and it goes great, i love it. However i still feel its a jack of all king of none... And at 31L it is way more a grovellor.

Iv had it out in a range of surf since i last posted and i think i will keep it as my grovel board and get either a HF 508 or a CC 508/9/10 then eventualy replace the SF...

The 508 spit goes in anything i can go out in 1fters and score tons of waves... But if it gets big/sucky/hollow it doesnt cope, its too shady on the critical drop ins and just feels corky and overly chunky...

I was pretty set on getting a 508 hellfire but have seen the CC and think it looks like a really good shape...

So i suppose really i want to know:

How would the HF and CC compare?

What size CC? (5'7 ~70kgs 25years fit beginner/intermediate for sucky hollow GC points and sandbar beachies)

Which would compliment my chunky spitfire groveler more and my end game 501 baked potato more...? any other suggestions for grovel board/2 board quiver also welcome! 504 potatonator?!

How would a 501 29.3L BP compare to a 508 31L spit for grovelability, feel and perfomance?

    Cheers!

EDIT: Looked in a few shops on the GC this weekend, the CC really does just look like a great shape too me... I was also attracted to the JR cousin it... oh and the timbertek boards look SICK

    Thanks for the reply matt,

Im from the uk originally, norfolk so not the best surf in the world haha! The gold coast is quite something in comparison but its just a LITTLE more crowded............

I think i would go 501 and 508 hellfire for sure from what everyone has said. I thought about the hellrazor too but a lot of people seem to think that altho its more hybridy and chunkier the hellfire actually copes better under pressure... i dunno people just seem to froth about this board and i suppose in the long run id get something to top off the upper end but these 2 will be a wicked foundation for a 3 board quiver!

Now just gotta justify the spend (more to my gf than myself haha)

    cheers

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback!

Just about everyone is suggesting go 508 on the hellfire which the more i think about it seems the right choice. Really useful to here your similar story and surfing the beachies (broadbeach is my closest) when they get sucky is classic territory where i start tihnking about changing up from the 508 spitfire.

just about everyone seems to froth over their hellfires! i suppose for now i could keep the 508 spit for grovelling and get a hellfire then get a BP or SP a little later altho it might be nice for the winter...

i suppose i really ought to board test some different sizes and models out of currumbin! my concern is under shooting on volume but i think thats the thing really the 508 spit feels corky and i would want the BP for grovelling and the hellfire for punchier stuff so at the right volume they should be great for their range and probably overlap eachother a little...

now im starting to question mainy sweet or baked potato and to go slightly more volume for uber grovelling or less for perfomance....

Thanks for your thoughts boys, i was starting to think that 501 and 508 would be the way to go with these two boards, im still open to other suggestions but thought these two models would be the best for me from what iv read... I suppose my 508 spitfire feels a bit corky often so thats a clear sign really but i dont wanna undershoot on volume either!

Matt id love to hear how you compare the SP and BP.

  • Expanding from 508 Spitfire to 501or3 Baked Potato and 508or10 Hellfire

    Hello everyone,

Got a lot of useful info on the forum a while ago looking at firewire boards and ended up buying a 2nd hand 508 spitfire which i LOVE. It grovels great and still turns well etc and goes good on bigger waves... My current issue is that its a bit of a jack of all trades king of none (well thats a lie it excels in the mid range). So i was going to expand and after my experience with this board i think its got to be more firewires...

I surf southern queensland and northern new south wales, mostly on the goldy. I think this is another factor after a few big swells recently the 508 spit felt a bit too buoyant and chunky in the hollow GC surf... Scary duckdives, sketchy drop ins and more than one occasion of going well and truly over the falls!

I am 24, around 70kgs maybe a little less, 5'7 (fairly stocky) strong and fit. Id say im a beginner/intermediate, i am happy to go out in anythign that i can get out in and give it a crack, get into waves pretty good, paddle fairly strong and get lots of turns in with the occasional cutback on a good day...

So i was thinking 501 or 503 Baked Potato and a 508 or 510 hellfire...

If anyone could give any advice on sizing and if they think that these would be good board choices (id sell the spitfire) that would be awesome! I suppose the plan would be to eventually get something really refined and high performance as a final addition... In the mean time i hope a hellfire would be happy on the overhead days and hopefully help me get inside a few dredging barrels...

    Cheers,

    Nelson

Hey bro! Thanks for the advice! I actually found a 5'8 pretty cheap in perfect condition 2nd hand so got it, the waves are super small at the moment on the gold coast so i figured it would make a good high performance grovellor... it does feel like its got a bit of volume to it but im sure il stil be able to duck dive it etc and bully it about in turns... my general thinking was i will be able to sell it on for basically the same price so might hit up a hellfire soon... gonna test drive some boards out of firewire currumbin soon! especially when the surf picks up which it should soon, and if i really love the spit i might just downsize on that or il go for something like 5'8 hellfire..... il let you know how it goes!!!

    Hey guys!

Looking for a bit of help deciding on which board and then what size!

So im on the gold coast looking for something that will hold in bigger surf but pick up some smaller stuff too.

    Im 5'7 and about 70kg.

Currently im riding a banged up, probably a bit water logged, 6'0 eden Ben Lowe thruster and i actually love it its just a bitch to get smaller waves with... It also feels pretty heavy (a bit water logged?!) but once its up its real nice and its doing the trick for an $80 2nd hand job but.

So my current thoughts are spitfire 5'6 or 5'8 and hellfire 5'8 or 5'10...

Im super stoked on surfing at the moment and just want smoething thats gonna be heaps of fun and will really help me progress... I am leaning towards the hellfire as the summer is on its way, i can put up with it on smaller days (or borrow my girlfriends minmal) and i feel like the hellfire would be a better mid point for building a quiver around...

Any advice would be awesome thanks in advance!

  • Spitfire/Hellfire and Sizing 70kg 5'7" beginner/intermediate

    Hey guys,

Just looking for a bit of help deciding on a spitfire or a hellfire and the correct size. Im 5'7" and 70kg would consider myself intermediate/beginner. I am currently riding a dinged up 2nd hand eden "ben lowe" thruster its a 6'0. Its pretty heavy for its size has probably taken on a bit of water, im having a great time on it surfing along the gold coast but am looking for something that will go a bit better in the smaller stuff and still hold up when its bigger... Im at the stage where im catching heaps of waves and starting to carve them up with nice turns when conditons are good, am happy to try and surf whatever i can paddle out in, im fit and learning fast but am finding it frustrating on smaller days with the current board.

So yeah just want something thats gonna be heaps of fun and help me progress ideally that i can get a good duckdive out of, will hold in bigger surf and will pick up smaller surf... is this too much to ask haha?!

Currently i am thinking Spitfire 5'8" or 5'6" and Hellfire 5'10" or 5'8"... Any suggestions? And sizing wise are the bigger two sizes gonna be too much board for me?

    Thanks heaps!
Working...
