I havnt surfed the alt but I like the look of it. The hellfire iv surfed a fair bit but still havnt really clicked with it, iv surfed it in knee - double overhead and it is a nice board but I think it's too much foam for me and that's why Im not finding it anything special. As soon as I got on the hellrazor I clicked with it straight away. Iv surfed it in knee - headhigh so far,the HZ grovels supprisingly well, better than HF, found it paddled as well as the HF perhaps even better and it has less foam ,im guessing this is due to the slightly flatter double concave. It grovels great but comes into its own when the waves get to around head high, i found this is when the board really started to feel alive! HZ feels more refined, feels like a hpsb which can handle a wide variety of conditions. I think I'll probably end up getting rid of the HF and getting another hpsb such as the MB, Alt or flexfire. Although the spit and HZ would probably have me covered for everything. That's what I have to say anyway, I think the HZ would be your best bet for a daily driver it's a sick board.

Dude it really doesn't need any more thickness at all trust me! think i'm preferring less foam these days, love the length of 5'11 as well, board feels perfect.
Yeah you were right it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be, really good swell! Double overhead down the coast from me but I didn't have much time today so had to just surf the beach next to my house, had a good time anyway. I think you would love the HZ mate, I remember you asked a lot about its grovel ability a while ago and it grovels really well, its like having a HPSB which can grovel. I love it ha ha!

This board is SICK!!!!! Surfed the beach next to my house which isnt really known as a surf beach as I didnt have much time today and am busy this eve. Waves were thigh high to head high and I am totally amazed at how well the board performed in these conditions, I was waiting for the bigger ones but did surf smaller ones too. Paddling was a breeze, catches waves with ease, really feels good on the bottom turn lots of bite, turns really nice, just felt perfect so glad I went for the 5'11. Yes it was really a day for the Spitfire but didnt really feel when I was out that I wish I had it instead of the HZ. Now the HZ blew me away with its grovel ability as I wasnt really expecting it to grovel, but the head high sets are when it really came alive. This board is fast! Felt faster than the hellfire, and the hellfire is crazy fast! I was running it as a thruster with 2 Powerbase armour flex DLs on the side and a SF4 in the back and it felt great, loads of drive!!! I need to surf it a bit more to really review its performance on cutbacks etc as this is based off 2.5 hours in the water, im so stoked with it Im struggling to remember all the waves and if I had any cutbacks, I remember doing a few snaps and it felt great. But yeah....totally stoked on this board!!!

I'd get rid of the potatonator, get a Sweet Potato which will cover you for small stuff, keep the spitfire for medium and the alt for bigger stuff, I think this covers you for more conditions. Personally I find the spitfire covers me from about knee high to a bit overhead, I wouldnt want to surf anything less than knee high anyway. Thats just me personally, as you've already had a sweet potato and currently have a potatonator you know more than me which board you want as I havnt surfed either of them, the question I would be asking myself would be..will the potatonator cover the higher end of the spitfire?. I just wouldnt part with my Spitfire its a magic little board. Good luck in your decision anyway :-)

Ok HZ arrived today, on initial inspection the 2.25 doesnt seem too thin at all, feels really nice under the arm, the double concave compared to the HF is notably more subtle. Looks like more nose rocker than the HF but I didnt inspect the rocker all that much, the tail is thicker than I thought it would be but overall the board looks and feels really nice, its been nanotuned too which is cool. Just got to wait for some decent swell to come now, looks like something is coming on Sunday but is going to be small, will probably take it in and see how it grovels. Will update once iv had a few surfs on it, cant wait!

Surely you could ride the 6'1 core its the same volume as the 5'10 HF isnt it? I wouldnt have minded the extra length of a 6'1 but 19 1/2 wide is more than I wanted, 19 1/4 is still a little bit more than I wanted but the thickness 2.25 should make up for that. I recon a 6'0 x 19 x 2.3 would be really nice, but I havnt even surfed it yet so Ill probably be loving the 5'11 when it comes and I cannot wait for it!!!

Im around your weight but about 12cm taller. I ride a 5'8 Spitfire & 5'10 hellfire, I think I could easily surf a 5'6 spit and 5'8 hellfire, the 5'10 hellfire in my opinion is quite chunky but when surfing it dont find that restricts performance, I think the extra foam will aid your paddling in Italy. If it turns out you dont like it, sell it and get a 5'8 or a different firewire. Good luck :-)

I visited Australia when I was younger and loved it, such an amazing place. My uncle lived near Byron Bay, Fernleigh, Bangalow area. Id love to go back and live there for a few months, the sharks and spiders do put me off though hahaha! I think the East/south east coast (queensland, new south wales) is where I would like to go, are there generally more parts of australia which are sharkier than others or are they just everywhere?

Had to sell the flexfire :( as it doesnt get used enough, hopefully the guy who bought it will give it what it deserves.HZ is a board iv been wanting to surf since it came out, it was a really really hard choice between it and the 6'0 thin michel. Originally the cut off tail put me off but its really grown on me. The michel was really tempting as by the sounds of it, people are cranking out some of the best turns/carves they've ever done on it. But the HZ is just calling out to me haha! Cheers for the help!

Hellfire handled Hossegor fine. Shame I didn't get any pics of me, got a lot of pros though.:( unfortunately hossegor handed me the worst conditions. Onshore, windy and massive for the first 5 days(typical!)Then all the sand banks were fucked for a few days after that apart from the contest site which had the best of it. Did surf 6 times and had it lovely twice, didn't get barrelled though, gutted! The pros pull barrels out of nowhere it's unreal!

Out of the MB & HZ which one do you think will grovel better? I'm not after a board for grovelling I have my spit for that but I want a higher performance short board which I can surf in waist - headhigh & above conditions.

Core you surf quite hollow, sucky waves dont you? how does the hellfire handle the barrel? think it will go well in hossegor?. Im thinking same as Prj that it will go good until the need of a stepup, and im not planning on surfing massive barrels over there anyway, id rather take it over my flexfire.

    Hellrazor or MB

I know this has been asked so many times but what are the main differences between these two going to be? Anyone ridden both??
Im planning on selling my 6'3 Flexfire as I dont use it much and it feels a bit like a boat to me now after surfing my 5'8 Spitfire for so long. At the moment im leaning towards the HZ because it just sounds sick from all the reviews! Im unsure though which size to go for between the 5'11 and 6'1. Im like 5'11.5 tall ( tiny bit below 6ft) and weigh around 70-72kg. The 5'11 sounds cool but the 2 1/4 puts me off a bit , the 6'1 sounds cool but the length puts me off a bit ( a 6'0 x 19 1/4 x 2.3 sounds perfect haha). I would be wanting it as a board which I could use in say waist high - overhead and a half. If I went MB it would be the 6'0 thin version for sure. What do you guys have to say about the matter?

Also this is an off topic question but im off to hossegor on sunday and wanted to ask if you guys think the 5'10 hellfire will handle it? How does it handle the barrel?

    Thanks as always guys!

I got both the Spit and the hellfire, these guys are so right, go for the spit in 1-4ft everytime. Its the board I find myself with the majority of the time. Id only take the Hellfire out when its 3ft + (as in head high + ), shame I havnt had many occasions to try the Hellfire but I plan on taking it to france with me in september to see how it handles the beach breaks there, one thing I can say about it is that it is really really fast. Also what Prj said about the 5'8 is true, my 6'3 flexfire feels so long now! much prefer the shorter boards!

I have a 5'8 Spit I'm 5'11-6'0 and around 155lbs, I had it out in about knee to shoulder high waves yesterday and it went better than i thought it would,Day before that I had it out in about waist to a bit overhead and it went insane, handles drops better than any board iv had, paddles like a dream, flies down the line and I was fitting in loads of turns, snaps, cuttys. So stoked on this board. I imagine if your 5'7 you would be loving the 5'8 spit for anything from knee high to a bit over head. Saying that the potatonator will by the sounds of it be even better on the smaller side and the SP even more so than that.

Edit: Iv just noticed you don't surf that often and surf a 6'8 so 5'8 would probably feel like too big of a jump. 6'0 would probs be good if you went spit it would be loads of float.

Really good fins, really secure, I noticed after a surf once the SF4s had slightly moved whereas the soars where in exactly the same position, so id say they are much better than FCS in that regard. Phill next time you order some I might be up for going in with you to save on shipping costs.

This happened in transit which sucks! This is secondhand board just asking you guys for a bit of help as I know firewires are made a bit differently, if it was a PU board id repair it right away but im unsure whether it needs repairing or not, you can feel it catch on your nail slightly but doesnt look like its a problem. So guys I picked up a 5'10 HF to fill my quiver. Came today and it looks sweet, shame it suffered a little crack in the tail in transit but its nothing bad! It has a lot more nose rocker than the SF and a bit more tail rocker, its tail is quite alot thinner and it hides its width well in my opinion. Took a pic of my quiver, I was lazy and couldnt be bothered to take the fins out and put them all back in but you can see the rockers/foils of the 5'8 spit, 5'10 HF and 6'3 flexfire. The spit is alot flatter than the HF, the flexfire looks quite wide in this pic I think its the angle but it is an inch thinner than the HF. Thought theses pics might be of some interest to people who are interested in any of these boards...

I think this will pretty much have me covered now for most conditions, a SP would do nicely though ha.

Iv actually got the chance of picking up a fairly cheap 5'10 hellfire so I think I might do that. Will have the 5'8 spit, 5'10 hf and 6'3 flex fire then. I think that will have me covered for a lot of stuff. Hope there isn't much overlap with the spit and hf, I don't really have £550 to spend on a new razor and I doubt many will be for sale secondhand anytime soon.

Right now I Have a 5'11 Hellrazor to complement my 5'6 spit and the combo works great. The spit has me covered for anything up to head high that is lacking some punch and even overhead if its still on the soft side of things. But once the waves get juicy the Hellrazor goes mental. It can grovel fairly well the wave just needs to have some punch, it will handle chop and things like that pretty nicely.
If you are worried that the Hellrazor won't be enough board for you in french beachies I will tell you to stop worrying. I surf mine every day down here in Costa Rica and have gotten it into some thick situations, it held just fine though.
If you are looking at surfing waves from waist to solid overhead than the HR will have you covered. If you are some freak charger that is lacking the idea of self preservation and are dead set on following core with the whole slab diving experiments than I would say maybe a step up.
I'm saying HR over the alternator or MB. Never ridden either of them but I love my HR so much I just want everyone else to have one too!
Also the HR has convertible 5 fin setup which for barrels helps a lot, throw a 4 fin in there and prepare to get blown out of some closeouts.
I bet the MB would go good too, not like Michel has ever ridden a barrel or anything.

    Hey Chito
    Thanks Man, great to hear!
One thing I'm interested to know with the razor is how it feels and performs with that sharp cut off coffin tail. That tail shape suggests it would be pretty loose and not hold as good when it gets a bit bigger..? Seems from loads of reviews it still goes great when it gets bigger though, I think it was Chris who said the hellfire would handle bigger waves better due to its tail shape amongst other things...

    Alternator, Hellrazor or MB.

Im in a bit of a predicament trying to decide what to do, so I thought id pester all you guys again as I do love a good discussion haha.
Im off to France in September, Iv got my 6'3 RF flexfire but Iv been thinking about either:

    1. Selling the Flexfire and getting a MB in like the 6'0 or 6'2 thin versions or the 6'1 HellRazor both in FST.
    or
    2. Picking up a second hand Alternator 6'0 in FST and keeping the Flexfire as this would fit nicely between my 5'8 spit and 6'3 Flexfire.

The reason im thinking about this is because I worry on the durability of the Rapidfire in heavy french beach breaks and travelling with it on the plane. I prefer the durability of the FST and the aesthetic looks of the boards I also rarely have much chance to use the flexfire.

I am about 5'11-6'0 and 68-70kgs, the 5'8 spitfire is perfect but my HPSB's I do like a tad longer say 6'0-6'3. The Hellfire is also an option due to the high number of amazing reviews but not sure I would like something quite that short for the 3-6ft wave range.

Im leaning towards the Alternator as It will be the cheaper option and has a bit of a more generous foil under the chest so should be grovel-able ( is that even a word i dont know). Also it will give me 3 boards in my quiver instead of just selling the Flexfire and having 2.
Saying that I can hear the HellRazor calling out to me hahaha.

    What do you think guys..

    Hey guys
Just wanted to say thanks to all for recommending the 5'8 Spit. Perfect sizing for me and paddles like a dream. Also recommend the Soar fins I got off Phill they feel so secure and banish my worries I have of FCS coming out,the way they lock in is alot better. Iv had it out in 3-6ft waves so far and I was tending to pick off the smaller ones as still getting used to the board but yeah totally stoked on it ,so nice one! much appreciated!

"The problem with getting good waves is,... they are never enough, they just make this addiction worse!" - Slowman this pretty much sums it up even more so over here in the UK.
Really enjoyed reading everything you have had to say about the HF too just makes me want one haha!

Core my height and weight are like 5'11 ( well inbetween 5'11 and 6'0 ) and around 66-70kgs.

Hmmm. Think id like either the MB or HF after reading loads of threads on here. The HF has amazing reviews and seems to be all the rave, will go in big stuff and versatile and the more they surf it the more they love it seems to be the general view, maybe overlap with the SF though... The MB is a lovely looking board and like you said sounds like it would be a great all round shortboard, I like to ride my HP shortboards a bit longer if they have less thickness so either the MB 6'0 x 18 3/4 x 2 3/8 or the 6'2 x 19 x 2 7/16. Hellfire would be a 5'10. Not going to be getting one for a while anyway but may start saving up now haha.

Both were ripping it.Really enjoy watching the comps, was gutted to see Taj go out so early was enjoying watching him and also John John and medina. Big mistake letting Ceej take that wave.

If you'd rather try DMs I can try and add a set to the order if it's not too late. If you order a set from Herb he can request any colour you like. I think there's a small $3 up charge if they have to make a single set in a different colour rather than a whole batch.

They feel more secure because instead of being screwed in with sideways pressure like FCS, the screws go into a ridge in the fin and actually works as downward pressure and pulls them hard into the bottom of the board. You don't want to get too carried away screwing them in because you can put a lot of pressure on your fin plugs and I don't doubt they'd eventually pop out if you cranked them up with a rachet as hard as you can.

I think you'd like the Armour flex, particularly in a medium wave board like the Spitfire. I have a set of C4 Ceramics on the way to try in my Taj for good waves. They actually make C3, C4 and C5 Ceramics which increase in stiffness. Apparently some top pro's using the C5s at huge Teauhpoo last year actually found them too stiff even in those conditions, but other guys love them. Tyler and Mickey Wright have been loving the C3 Ceramics so I figured I'd try the C4 for now. I do love the Armour flex though, no complaints with them at all, more curious to try the stiffer ones than anything.
The DLs sound fine then, are they much bigger than PC5s? How much would you want for them? I tried to PM you but no option to do so, to discuss this more.

Will, looks like ceramic sets are running around $100USD per set and armour around $70-80USD. Postage would be around $15 between us.

Like I said, it's possibly too late to jump on this order as it was placed 2-3 weeks ago and may have even shipped by now, but if you're keen I'll happily sell you an immaculate set of charcoal armour DLs when my ceramics arrive, and if you love them as much as I do maybe jump in on the order next time?
Ok, isnt the DL a large size? I normally surf medium fins as I dont weigh much. Would the armour flex be alright for me, are they for bigger guys or smaller? How do they feel more secure than FCS then? because of the "powerbase" which goes flush to the board? You only selling charcoal coloured ones? Cheers!

Quad, I think a great starting point is the SF4 set. From there you can identify what you like about that set and what you'd want to change. Otherwise it's just stabbing in the dark.
Thruster wise, I think the same could be said for the PC5s. A good all round and neutral template. From there if you want more release or more hold or drive etc it's easier to make recommendations.
What fins do you current have at your disposal?
Well they come with SF4s anyway, but was thinking of a thruster set as well. I have PC5s on my FF though so sounds like im sorted. My other 5'10 board takes future fins, and I have to admit I much prefer them to FCS in both aesthetics and build quality ( im always worried a fin will come out with fcs as has done a few times where as futures they dont worry me at all, just seems like a much better design to me) I have been using the F4s as a quad and WCTs as a thruster but I think the spitfire I get will be in FCS as easier to get hold of than a futures one ( I wont have to wait months!).

I will be going for the 5'8! thanks all!

All you guys have really given me loads of great advice, really appreciate it. Im leaning towards 5'8 after all youv said.

As far as the ease of paddling goes, is a mix of both, AND the plane surface AND entry rocker
Ifo you didn't find the flex fire hard to paddle then the Spit will paddle itself
Havnt quite been around the block, iv only been surfing for around 2 years but go everytime there are waves. Id just say im average. How do you find it paddling your 5'8 Spit compared to your 6'2 FF ?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Once you start taking the thing out on headhigh plus days having the smaller size becomes pretty important too I think.
I started in a 5'10" and moved down to a 5'8" because of this. Then considered setting down again to a 5'6"...
Why do you think the smaller size for headhigh plus? wouldnt the added length of the 5'10 add a bit more stability? Thanks!

I paddle the 6'3 Flexfire fine and the volume on that is 28.2
The spitfire 5'8 volume is 30. On the 5'10 33.
Iv been riding the flexfire in quite alot of conditions from 2-6ft lately..I dont find it that hard to get it going in the smaller stuff. I just surf it rail to rail and do lots of turns.
I havnt rode my other 5'10 for a bit, but it has more volume than the FF. Although I do remember getting stuck on the lip fairly often with it..could be positioning or not taking that last paddle stroke.

Is it volume or length which makes ease of paddling..

Im leaning towards the 5'8 as it sounds like if i get the 5'10 I will probably want to move down to the 5'8 not long after. Just afraid of losing wave time.

Yeah I emailed firewire and have been linked onto a guy who works for boardshop. He recommends me 5'10. Im having a hard time here deciding which one 5'10 or 5'8, 5'10 or 5'8 ahhhhhh!

How much difference am I going to notice regarding maneuverability and paddling with 5'10 and 5'8.

Thanks for all the help guys!

    Hey dudes,
Thanks for the replies! Yeah 2-5ft in "surfer terms" (ie waist high to 1.5 times overhead). Yeah the dom was the original one i was looking at then saw the spit and thought it looked even better. Do you know if they come in future setup or only fcs? Hard finding the spit here in the UK aswell.

started a topic Hellfire, Spitfire or Dom?

    Hellfire, Spitfire or Dom?

    Hey all,
Been looking for a new board and these 3 have attracted my attention. Looking for the most versatile one to take travelling with me in europe, Something that goes in 2-5ft and can handle it ok when it starts barrelling aswell (maybe asking too much here haha). Im 5'11 and 66kgs (intermediate I guess), can do snaps, cutbacks I have most fun surfing waves 2-4ft. I have two boards at the moment, one is PU, five fin 5'10 x 20 x 2.5 square tail, my go to board for 2-4ft. I also have a Firewire Flexfire RF 6'3 x 18 3/4 x 2 3/8 for the 4ft + days. Which model would you guys recommend me and which size?
    Thanks!!
Working...
