Tescot, thanks for your contact, I've been over all of these issues and are working through them, the main one being the forum speed ... i've tried a handful of suggest forum tweaks and none have seemed to work very well. Although the forum doesn't seem that slow to me ... everyone else has brought it up enough where i'm chasing it down. I've got a couple of support tickets out to the forum creators, so i'm hoping they will provide some solutions.
in the meantime, can i get a showing of what issues we're still having?
-speed of forum
-inline photos? are people still having a problem with that?
-who is the like button still not working for? is it working for some of you?
-what else?

The place to chat about all things related to those designing boards in the Firewire range. Just an FYI, this isn't meant to be a question and answer section, more of a freeform discussion with each other. The designers may make an odd appearance, but won't be signing in to answer questions on a daily basis.

haha thanks re the screen name, just had to think of something quick and it's the first that came to mind.Originally posted by fokaiHI View Posti dig ur screen name
the ADD is a big board wether its a 6'6 or 6'10. it may be shorter than ur mini mal, but might actually b bigger. I'm not saying not to buy it, but will say that u shud give ur mini mal some more sessions. get ur timing and paddling down to catching waves and the rest will follow. b more patient w ur learning curve. if ur looking for more performance, there r other boards w lots of volume like the DOM, ACT, or JK that might b stable enuff for u to go with.
I'm not looking for a performance board for this one, as the chilli (that I can't get up on) can kind of bridge that gap, and I need to learn to walk before I can run. I'm more or less looking for something to replace the mini-mal, as coming from a bodyboard, it just seems like way too much board to be moving around in the lineup. It paddles easy (impossible to duckdive though) and I can catch waves with it easy (staying up is another story), but I just hate trying to spin it around in the lineup. Also, where I surf the beachies tend to pitch a little if you delay the take off, and I find with the mini-mal that it's not big enough to get into the wave as early as a 9ft mal, but still big enough to be really difficult to takeoff on when the wave hollows out (I'm talking sub-3ft here) and I tend to nosedive it.
If the addvance is the board for a beginner in terms of volume and volume placement, which would effectively be more of a replacement for the mini-mal.. a 6'6" or a 6'10"?
Is there any downside to getting a 6'10" for the extra stability?Leave a comment:

thanks for the reply here and in the other thread, much appreciated.
I might just stick with the addvance in that case. The Dom is pretty much brand new, but sounds like the addvance might be the better option.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the reply!Originally posted by prjwebb View PostAddvance sounds spot on to me.
If you feel comfortable with the 6'6 dims go with that. If you want to go bigger go 6'10 but no bigger.
I'm not actually sure which dimensions would suit better. I usually get pretty frustrated with not being able to get waves on the chilli, but maybe the 6'6" addvance with it's additional volume will be enough..? not sure..Leave a comment:

Is a Dominator suitable for a newb?
Sorry, don't want to post the same message in numerous threads without reason (see quote below from the Addvance thread) however a used Dominator just popped up on my local classifieds site and it looks brand new, it's 6'10" and about $350 cheaper than a new one.
Given the below scenario (swap the Addvance for a Dominator), would the used Dominator be suitable?

I can't get used to the sheer length of it and it just makes it feel really cumbersome in the water. I pretty much got sick of it after 2 surfs, so I went out and bought a Chilli Red Peppa being a board suited to small surf, I thought it would be easier to learn on.... not so. I'm not sure if it's the volume of the Chilli 6'2" x 21 1/2 x 2 9/16 = 37.65L, but I can't seem to get it into waves, and spend most of my time paddling and exhausting myself. By comparison, the mini-mal was super easy, just too big. I broke my knee on the snowboard about 3 weeks after buying the chilli, and didn't really take it back out until last weekend when I was reminded of how difficult it was.
I've got plenty of ocean experience, but none when it comes to stand-up surfing. Just wondering if the Addvance would be the way to go? I'd like something smaller than the mini-mal, but easier to paddle and more stable than the 6'2" chilli. It doesn't need to be a do it all board, as I can use the chilli when it gets to chest/head high once I get comfortable enough surfing.. so I'll basically use it for chest high or below surf just to learn on, or for flatter days when there's not much else to do.
I'm 5'9" and 174 lbs and have average+ fitness.
Do you think an Addvance would be that board? If so, what size?
I was also considering a sweet potato, but I think the flat nose rocker might be a little unforgiving for a newb. -

Hi Chris,
Say what? Sorry bit confused, did you mean they aren't available in US or aren't available in OZ? I thought I'd already seen a shop advertising them in US.
I'm in Australia so if they are going to be here I'm happy.
Even if not in Australia please tell where the limited release is and who is selling these babies?

Hi Chris, I love the look and idea of these boards. I see they are in shops in USA already, I'm keen to replace my SP and DM which seem to be two shapes already showing - two questions - when are they expected in Australia and will price be same as RF?

gun
i'm looking to get a gun before hurricane season/winter here on the east coast. I'm a bigger guy, 6'2" 215lbs. I've been riding firewires for short boards and a 6'6" setup only for the last 5,6 years but never had a bigger board. What's every ones take on their 7'2" gun? how does it handle in bigger surf? they don't seem to be in stock anywhere. -

Hi Braders, here is my first try on a bamboo deck using POSCA on my pnator. The older pens in lighter colours took some double coating to get coverage over the bamboo but the fresher pens (dark blue and light blue) only took one coat. Like Chris says do a light sand with 600 first and overspray with clear acrylic to seal Jus AttachmentOriginally posted by Braders View PostHi guys! anyone out there know if you can use pens on the bamboo deck?Last edited by jus; 08-01-2012, 04:02 AM.

Im dreaming for for that 5'10" X 19.25 as well, hope this board leans closer to the "High Performance" board as opposed to the "Performance Hybrid"; thinner!

Also, while we're on the topic, what fin setups does everyone like in their flexflights and TJ's?
Hey Maineiac,
Posted a bit of info on this under "I F*cking Love my TJPro.... Check it out.
Basically: I personally love the Thruster set compared to the 2+1. Will never go back on my High Performance LB's. There is a time and place to switch it up but I rocked the FCS HI-1 (Harley Ingleby's $100 set; a lil pricey to experiment I know but...) for the first time at Upper Trestles and loved it. Lots of Drive! Let me repeat, lots of drive going on with these fins. But, if your looking for quick maneuverability, tight pocket speed etc... the Thruster seems to outperform the 2+1.
When I do switch it up on this board i ride 6" center with PC-3 side bits (some have told me that they think the PC-3 set up is to "drivey" compared to "traditional PG-sides", so I guess I like it that way). Hope this helps.Attachment AttachmentLeave a comment:

Hey Chris,
Order as been placed. Can't wait! I put in for a 510 hoping they run similar to the specs on Mayhems blog: 5'10" X 19.5" X 2.38
Noted a preference for FCS fins (did notice they were FCS in the photo) but willing to be open to either or. Hope it trickles in soon. Can't wait to give it a test run before I get down to CR in July.Leave a comment:

Sweet Chris! Thanks for the reply. Ralphie is going to love hearing me put in this order. Especially with the remodel going on; he is going to have me stopping by the shop everyday on my way home just to see if it showed up! Can totally be flexible with the fins. Am I right in assuming the first batches will be FCS since the photo Matt posted included the FCS system?

Totally agree. It seems like this Mini Driver has been pretty versatile; from Indo --> Trestles --> HB --> Hawaii. Would love updates on the availability ASAP. Want to add one to the board bag for CR this July. That short vid of Taylor Clark on it at Trestles shows a lot of this boards ability. Is it close enough to fruition to put in an order at my local shop? (Big Ups to Killer Dana!)

"Any Word?" is right... Been looking to add something to my 5'8" Spitfire before Summer. Something less grovelly and more geared toward that speed/drive factor. Saw the PU in Store this weekend. What would be your thought comparison between this board and the Sub Scorcher?

I F*cking Love my TJPro... can I customize it????
Hey Chris,
Is the TJPro able to have its dimensions tweaked if one were interested in a custom order? I've been ridding the board for about 9 mo's, LOVE IT! There really is no comparison to a PU Longboard. I have yet to fix a single ding in this board, and I ride without a leash; at Trestles (a literal hotbed for dings at low-tide for those that know). The quality, and more importantly the durability, of your boards sent me to purchase a 5'8" Spitfire a month a ago for an upcoming trip to CR... Love it so far. I bit weak as a thruster, better as a quad, loved it once it became a 4 1/4 fin.
Anyway...I would love to be able to scale the TJPro down, just a little, from its current size. I've been able to realize, competing against him, that Taylor is quite taller than I and thus has a bit more leverage from the waist down. His ability to throw that board around thru roundhouses and airs is impressive. I think some (especially the younger generation) could benefit from a board approximately 9' X 21 1/8 X 2 1/2. Basically a board a little less bulky thru the middle 3d and a tail slightly more pulled in and rounded then the squash. I started this board as a 2+1 (rocking a 6" center fin and PC-3 sides) as I have always ridden. I noticed immediately that the board called for more. I put in a set of HI-1 thrusters and will officially NEVER rock a 2+1 on a Hi-pro LB again! I guess I'm basically trying to squeeze as much as I can out of this model. Thoughts?
Was there ever a consideration for a board with slightly smaller dimensions? I mean, with the strength and durability felt on the 900Q-03 I would be blown away to find out that a smaller board would be too fragile. Anyone else experience similar feelings? -

I'd also be interested to know what FW officiallly recommends for spraying. What brand did you guys use? Chris do you have a recommended product in Australia.
Does anyone know of coloured acrylic spray cans in Australia? I think Krylon is acrylic but don't think we can get it here.
Does enamel do any damage?
There are quite a few different types of enamel and I wonder if they are all safe.
Molotow do enamel paint pens that are good for outdoor use that probably don't need sealing but again not sure about the enamel?
Attached is some boards I've done but this is all posca and acrylic spray.Attached FilesLeave a comment:

I have a 5.10 pn - have controllers and SA 5 sets, both of which I had got for SweetP and both worked pretty well on my spud (with the nod going to the SA by a whisker if I had to decide), when I got the PN I tired both the controllers and the SA (both as quad and tri) and wasn't feeling it, I had even tried the Front Controllers and rear SA then I saw cuttlefish post and today I went to SA up front and Controllers rear and the board came alive for me, I was starting to think PN wasn't really the board for me till got on this fin set up. Not sure if it will work for others but definitely my best combo yet. Jus

surf movies
i'm a big fan of documentaries and just now found this not released surf doc that looks pretty fascinating:
http://www.snagfilms.com/splinters
Splinters is the first feature-length documentary film about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea. In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo. Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic. A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way. -

Is this because of the new software? Kinda sucks... how many other people has this happened to?
