    Bigger size for beginner?

    I'm 180lbs, 39, not a great surfer (though advanced transition skateboarder > 20 years).

I can get up and go down the line on my 6' 10" Addvance.

The Sweet Potato is clearly a too advanced board for me but I love a challenge, would their be any point in getting a big version (5' 8" or so)? I feel if I can actually catch waves I'll be fine as once up it feels like skateboarding to me.

I know everyone says don't oversize it, but what about beginners moving to intermediates? Obviously my problem is going to be actually catching the wave first, hence my question...

    Cheers

What is a small wave board?

I'm fairly new to surfing, just got hold of a 6' 10" Addvance which is great (39 yrs 182lbs)

What I don't understand is how something like a 5' 4" SP is going to be better for small waves? Here in the UK, our small waves don't have much power and to be honest the Addvance might struggle even with it's volume.

Just trying to get my head around how riding a SP, BP etc. would help in this situation.

Fully aware I'm probably not good enough to surf one, but I do love a bit of tech and would like to figure it out.

    6' 10" Addvance - First ride

I got to ride the 6' 10" yesterday. I'm not a great surfer, nor have I surfed a lot of boards (this is the shortest board I've ridden), so take this with a pinch of salt but thought I'd post how I got on. I'm 39 182lbs, good skater, bad surfer.

Was at Bantham, UK, messy and about 2ft with some bigger ones coming through, board had plently of float, I found it a toughish paddle, might have been cos it was super choppy, took me a while to get used to paddling wider as the board is wide, probably I need to paddle a little higher up the board, not worried about this though I find all boards a tough paddle.

Took me a few tries to get a wave, I was super tired due to a heavy weekend so didn't have much energy. I really had to get close to the shoulder or to where the wave has just broke to catch one, once I was up dug my rail in and fell off immediately, this thing turns! I was riding it thruster.

Got a few other waves and stood up, so much more fun than my 7' 6" mini mal, different world, could turn it fairly easily, it turned pretty tight. It caught waves early, I was probably getting up too late as I'm used to giving it a few more paddles on the mini mal.

All in all very pleased, I can't wait to take it out on a clean day, I've got a feeling that the 6' 6" may have been ok, not sure.

I've just recieved some stretch FCS quads for it, apparently a faster paddle but skids out, I'm so far from doing that anyway that I'll take the paddle help.

    Please recommend me a Firewire

    Hi,

I'm really keen to get a new board, love the whole Firewire vibe, though am considering my options!

I'm pretty new to surfing, been doing it around 3 years, but only get to go 10-15 times a year due to location in UK.

I'm an advanced level skateboarder and snowboarder (over 20 years experience), surfing wise I've been riding Mini Mals (7' 6" & 7' 3") and I get most waves I go for, and am starting to travel across the line both ways, though the waves I've been riding recently close out pretty quick.

In the right waves (Sri Lanka) due to my skating experience as soon as I was up on the wave everything made sense and I felt totally comfortable, though this was a while ago and I didn't try to turn much.

I'm from the UK, the waves we get are relatively small and usually messy, though planning a trip to Barbados later in the year.

    I'm 39, 82.5kg / 182 lbs, relatively fit.

I've posted this in the Dominator section, but that's only because there wasn't a 'General' board sections, I would consider any Firewire.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Wanted: Addvance 6' 10" or 6' 6"

    Hey,

As I can't try one out first, I'd love to get one of the above 2nd hand so I can move it on if I don't get on with it.

Let me know if you have one for sale.

    Cheers

Ding on 2nd hand board with water ingress?

    Hi,

I've been offered this board 2nd hand, the owner was up front that the board had a slight ding and i've seen before / after photos.

There is one small dark area on the rail, I was hoping this was wood stain but as it's right by where the repair was so seems to be ingress,

Could this have any impact on the board? The guy says even if it is ingress there's no way it got in anywhere else than the rail.

Would appreciate any advice as I'm pretty new to all this.

6' 8" Dominator, too big or too small?

    Hi,

    I've been offered a 2nd hand Dominator FST in 6' 8"

I'm pretty new to surfing, been doing it around 3 years, but only get to go 10-15 times a year due to location in UK.

I'm an advanced level skateboarder and snowboarder (over 20 years experience), surfing wise I've been riding Mini Mals and I get most waves I go for, and am starting to travel across the line both ways, though the waves I've been riding recently close out pretty quick.

    I'm 39, 82.5kg / 182 lbs, relatively fit.

I worry that both the board is too small (moving down from a Mal too soon) and too big (everyone on here seems to say ride it shorter than you think).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
