Have the 5'4 PN in fst and it's my favorite board ever. Give it a chance. What's your fin set up? That may have something to do with your frustration.

Have a 5'4 vanguard and a 5'8 hellfire and I feel like the vanguard paddles a bit better and gets into waves a bit easier. It's also a bit better groveler. To me the hellfire feels a bit more like a traditional high performance board than the vanguard. Vanguard is a pretty high performance board though.

You shouldn't be afraid of the potatonator. I surf the same weak east coast waves here in Florida, and the potatonator is the best board I've ever had for these conditions. Can surf nearly everyday on the potatonator. It's an incredible groveler, but very high performance. Have 7 boards right now and surf the potatonator about 80% of the time.

I'm 5'8 170 lb, ride the 5'4 vanguard. Floats quite well, paddles great, grovels much better than expected. To me it feels pretty close to a high performance shortboard, not too weird or different, just feels smaller, grovels better, it's a bit faster and a bit easier to throw around. The skateboard comparisons seem pretty accurate. Overall great board.

i Ride the 5'2 sp and it feels too big. I Ride the 5'4 PN and it feels perfect. Don't be afraid to go small, especially at your weight.

i'd steer clear of the stretch quads. they make the board feel a bit too loose, but not in a good way, almost like a twin fin. felt like i had to nurse my turns a bit too much with the stretch fins or the fins would slide out. have the rusty 5 fin set and it's much better. if you still want the stretch fins despite this warning, i'll sell you mine for a heavily reduced price, they've only been surfed 2 times, once in my 5'2 SP (made it feel finless) and once in my 5'4 PN (made it feel close to finless).

How do you size the tomo board. Should you use the same volume guidelines as the rest of the boards or do you go smaller?

PN actually performs quite well on the low end of things. Ride it in under waist high (1-2') waves all the time here in Florida and still have a great time. It's taken the place of my SP.

Live in Florida so no step up board required. I guess if we did get some overhead hurricane swell I'd ride my 5'8 hellfire or 5'10 fst stealth. rode that board in all conditions when I lived in San Francisco. Surfed it in Up to about 2x overhead, not crazy about surfing much bigger waves than that.

Pretty sure I surfed with mdayton360 yesterday morning at the NSB inlet. Board looks like it goes quite well, and the guy rips, so I'm believing what he's got to say about it.

    ben,

I'm 5'8, 165 lbs and live in new smyrna beach florida. i think the 5'3 BP is probably a bit big for you, especially if your HPSB is in the range of a 5'10 ALT. i have a 5'2 SP and it feels like a SUP to me on some days. also, since getting a 5'4 Potatonator, i almost never ride the SP anymore because I can surf almost every day on the 5'4 PN, from shin high to head high. if you're considering the PN, I highly recommend it, I've got 6 boards in my quiver right now and I surf the PN >90% of the time here in florida, it maintains a high performance feel even on really small days. can't say enough good things about the potatonator, makes all those 1-2 ft days feel like good waves. but if you are set on the bake potato, I'd go for the 5'1 if I were you, it will float you much better than you think. i tell people who ask about the SP or the PN to get one 2 inches smaller than they think they should.

joel in quarterfinal heat 3. that 9.33, that's worse scoring than adriano's floater in rio last year.

I'm not saying parko isn't good, he's just grossly overscored. he gets scored in the excellent range for waves with 2 turns. check round 3 heat 7 (8.4 for 2 turns and a foam climb), and don't get me started on the 9.93 (2 solid turns and a handful of floaters and soft top turns, excellent wave but giving him a 9.93 is a joke) also round 4 heat 3 a 9.87 for a couple of tail blows and a few flowy turns, 8.5 maybe, maybe even 9.0, but 9.87, that's crazy. it's maddening to watch. watching the comp, lots of better waves with more risk and better variety of maneuvers are being scored in the 7 range. again, it's maddening, and parko seems to get overscored in every comp.

i don't have anything against joel parkinson, he's obviously one of the world's best surfers, he just seems to be judged more favorably than anyone else (it seems like the judging criteria for this comp is specifically tailored for him).

can't stomach watching joel parkinson, the guy does a few decent turns and gets a 9.87. the scoring is completely skewed in his favor. ace buchan also, both are getting huge scores for fairly mundane surfing.

i felt exactly the same way when i first got the SP. had the stretch quads in it at first and it felt slow and slid too much, I was initially disappointed. got the controllers shortly thereafter and found myself riding the SP almost exclusively in anything under chest high. the controllers feel like they were made for this board. not sure what it is about them, but the controllers give you a familiar and reliable thruster type feeling.

I'm 5'8 170 lbs, intermediate/advanced surfer. looking to ride it in thigh to chest high waves on east coast florida.

Right on @ iggy yeah I am pretty stoked about it just got it today you got any recommendations on the futures right now I am looking at the SA3's thruster set was thinking bout making a quad got a feeling it might be a little to loose feeling for me right now but I am def happy in the future I can switch it out and make into a quad. @ Buzzy I hope its not a lemon board for him he really does not have much experience and I defiantly did not start out on a 6'6 that's what worry me but like you said it does have alot of float so maybe it will be alright. Sent them a email gonna have to see what they say I am gonna talk to my buddy who I ordered them from and see what he says as well.

    just got the dominator

hey got a few questions I ordered a 6'8 dominator from one of my buddys (just cause of price reasons) but when it came in the mail it was a 6'6. I am a semi beginner been doing for about two years and able to get up and get down the line. I am defiantly wont to progress my surfing into other things this might seem like a crazy question but I wonder how much it will effect my abilities right now I ride 7'0 WRV. I am 6'0 about 190-200 (haven't weighed myself in a while). Also this board comes with future fin set up I don't really know anything about those any suggestions I ride shorebreak and sloppy mushy waves most the time unless there's a good storm on the east coast of the US. The real big concern is I helped a friend buy his first board I told him to get the 6'10 addvance since he was a beginner but when he got his it was as well a 6'6. I don't know what to do cause this pretty small and I feel he going get frustrated and have a hard time but I ordered it straight from the manufacturer so I don't know if I can send it back or if they can do anything about it.

What kind of fin set up would you think could be a good set up for my ability? I had the guy at the shop explain it to me when I bought my first board but I was not really paying attention was more interested in getting that board out in the water so I am pretty open if any of you guys have any suggestions as well as a way of setting up my fins and will it only take fcs?

the wrv is 7' x 21" x 3 1/2" not really sure what the sharp eye was but it sounds like the dominator is the best bet for me and i know it has a 5 fin set up whats all the different things i can do with that. i def looking forward to getting out there with a new board thanks again for all the help. Also i have a friend whos interested in getting into it i was going hook him on the addvance looks like its a good beginner board he says he is able to get up i dunno how interested he is as far as wonting to pro-sue it as a passion or really how good he is but he looking to buy a board and at the place we would get them from i can get a package deal if i can get him to buy a board.

Thanks for the help bud I feel like i got a thousand more ?'s...lol first whats the difference in the tails the dominator has that round kind of tail how is better for the conditions i would be facing with semi mushy surface with nothing really getting over head unless we get a crazy storm but if we did would it be a good board to take out in say in head to a couple of feet over it may sound like a dumb ? but i feel like surfboards are def investments and would like to hold on to them for a while as i may not be able to really mess with that right now just looking towards the future and as i progress being able to charge bigger and bigger waves. With it being such a floaty board is that going affect my ability to push through to get out to the break thats kind of the problem i am having now with that wrv being 3 1/2'' thick when the currents really pumping and its chest or bigger its a pain trying to get that bug clunky thing out i feel like its so thick and wide the current just has its way with it now when its good day that thing works like a charm and is super easy to paddle out but maybe its just me and my ability range of still learning all the tricks. Also you think that would be a good board to surf the various different conditions as far as durability that look very strong have not seen many bad reviews on them.

I have ridden a 6'8 Sharp eye and have a 7'0 wrv that I bought when I first started out. I would like to find something that has a bit of a slower feel. The WRV that have I feel as if its just super fast and it is such a pain to duck dive its a good board though and its taught me a lot, what bout the el fuego or any of the other boards I have done some research and would def like to get a firewire what sizes should i be looking at for the dominator i am 5'11 and somewhere between 185 and 190 maybe a little more and whats with the plug haven't really found any good solid answers on what it actually does other that release air for different pressures.

    Board Shopping

Whats up I am looking for some info on which fire wire board would work well for me and my abilities. I have been surfing for about a year or so had a old roommate who was real into it and he got me hooked however I have always been around board sports skating wake boarding and snowboarding I would say my as far as balance I am pretty good. I have gotten past the point of learning to stand up and riding straight now I have gotten to the point of being able to get down the line and trying to learn basics. I live on the east coast in North Carolina so its usually no bigger than head high and mushy unless we have a hurricane but I am in the process of actually moving to the beach and since I have the basics I would def. like to get a another board and keep trying to progress at this. Any recommendations for a board would be awesome
