comparison between the two:

Subscorcher has more volume per unit length, fuller rails, and a flatter rocker. Faster in smaller surf not quite as "trustworthy" in better surf, meaning its easier to blow out at high speeds. Both are sick boards and I actually think, they complement each other really well, but i wouldn't say they are interchangeable.

Had a great surf on my Sub today. Headhigh, maybe a little over on some sets. Moderate offshore. Low tide on a really fun bank with just me and a few mates out. Some good long lefts walling up and some really good rights with a little bowl that really let you hook into some turns. One of the first surfs I've had on the Sub that has had consistent walls to really get a couple of turns on wave after wave even though I've had it a while now. That's how often it's racy closeouts here!
Board felt really good and I'm loving those Soar fins. Plenty of drive, tight turns and good release in snaps but no slide. Just a good all round set of fins. First surf I've had in ages where I've come in feeling good about the session (except for the Potato day) and how I surfed.

Hi guys

Looking at getting a a sub scorcher for small and gutless surf, but not sure to go for the 6'2 or the 6'0 as I would probably fall somewhere in between here. The 6'2 has a lot more volume than what I am used to(HP 31,6L) but the 6.0 might not be enough for surfing small crappy waves.

Note that I will mostly surf with a 6/5/4 wettie which will be slowing me down a fair bit.

The 5'8" is slightly less volume than I'd typically use, but the board goes great. I've been using it in everything from waist high weaker stuff right up to head and a half clean groundswell. It seems to work best somewhere in the middle though.
As a board for small, gutless surf I don't think the Sub is your best choice though. I see it more as a mini shortboard than really loves a bit of shape to the waves. Maybe if I moved up a size it'd work a little better for the small, gutless stuff but I see something like the Potatonator/Dominator/Sweet Potato being better for those days.

Thanks for the feedback. Kind of thinking that if I stick with the 6'2 it would work in smeller waves. I have tried the dominator and I have got the Spitfire, but can't really get used to riding hybrids. Can't really get them to work, hence not surfing how I want to.

Will probably go for a 6'2 as it would be a good travel board as well in addition to a normal HP board

They definitely paddle better and catch waves better than the volume would suggest. I wouldn't say I catch waves early on it, but with a bit of positioning right in the peak it gets going easy with a couple of paddles.
Really fun board though, I'd love to try one a little longer and a touch narrower. 5'10" x 19" x 2.31" would be goooood!

Hey norberg,

This might help on sizing i am 6'1 and 82kgs and i ride a 6'0 scorcher with large AMs and its perfect, it paddles well, picks up waves easier then a normal shortboard, can handle well over my head power waves, even had a barrell on it and it held perfectly, it loves sucky beach breaks and loves no it drolls i droll over the beachies when the easterly wind has made it nice and messey and everyone is in carpark watching. It turns on a dime, comes off the top no worries and it will drive off the bottom with plenty speed and power, i had some amazing righthanders the other day to myself(magic morning only after an hour i was joined by a Doctor from sydney who couldn't belive his luck) about 8ft consistent on the face and i really had an opportunity to work the board over and over and it preformed better then expected. The kick in the tail really allows you to turn back into the pocket or pump it a little to accelerate to the next part of the wave. its a great all rounder and i surf that and my potato and nothing else now, i live in a spot with average waves most time so its perfect. hope this helps.

Looking for opinion here, would a 6'2 Sub paddle better than a 5'10 dom?

ohhh tough call...hard to back numerically, or really with anything other than an estimate.

I think they will paddle comparably in decent surf, but I do feel the Dominator has a better small wave versatility.

I personally would reach for the Sub Scorcher in clean ripple surf because it has a slightly narrower nose, but over all, its a FLAT short board that does get into waves easily.
