Thread: Potatonator: small wave assasinator?

  1. #211
    Guys,

I am also seeking some advice. I just bought a new 5'10" PN. I am an experienced surfer at 93 kg's & 6ft. I have an FST with the FCS fin set up. I have ridden it twice now as a quad with PC5 front fins and GXQ trailers. Today it was 2-3ft & fattish. One thing I found was that on a couple of occasions, when doing backhand re-entries the board would slide. Has anyone else experienced this. On a positive note the board has heaps of speed and is quite maneuverable. Not sure if the sliding is just because my fins are too small. I am going to ride again I the morning and plan to try as a thruster.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Yeah Damoze , you answered your own question. I am 83kgs and ride 7's. I used to ride 5's but found the same issue. At 93kgs you are definitely big enough to use 7's. Now..with quads you may think you need less fin (because you have more fins) but..you only have 2 fins when on a rail and that should be the same at a thruster set up. Bigger is better..in your case.

Yeah, I've even slid out a PC7 quad in small waves, so a 5 would offer much less control. Go up to size 7's.

you might try larger leading fins or go with a truster. keep in mind too that the tail is relatively wide no matter what kind of fins you use so some of the "board control" will come from adjustments to technique as well...

    Cheers and hope this helps!!

Thanks guys, appreciate your feedback. I have changed to KR Luke Egan front fins and SF4 trailers. I found this much better but as Chris says, an adjustment in style has probably also helped. I don't think I slid once. I have surfed it 4 times now and enjoy it more each time. I'm finding it a revelation in 1-2ft.

I'm sure this has been covered in other threads but is there a consensus on a good FCS quad set for the more larger gentleman such as myself?

I've only tried two and I prefer a thruster set up. The two I tried are indo fin controllers, and PC7 the dedicated trailers (QPX?). I didn't like the indo fins even though others like them, and enjoyed the PC7 quad set in smaller waves.

As a quad set up I have tried it with both the Simon Anderson (Large) and the Elevon Quad set (which are also a large fin)...I loved both those sets...The Simons for a more traditional quad feel and the Elevons for a feeling like it was on rails and with a ton of lift...

    Hi Guys,

I ended up changing my 5'10 PN down to a 5'8 and rode it for the 1st time today (I am 92kg & 6ft tall). I loved the 5'10 but Judy found it had too much volume.

I took a trip down the south coast of Sydney this morning and arrived on sunrise to find 3ft peaks in offshore conditions. Rights a bit fat but lefts running with a barrel end section. Well all I can say is the PN was fantastic. I was a little concerned it might be a little light for me but even at 33.9L it still had plenty of float and was super fast.

2 inches less means this model is way looser. I have the FST in the FCS and rode it with Sunny Garcia fronts and SF4 trailers. A good combo. When I picked up the board I got myself a pair of MR twinnies and are looking forward to giving them a go.

I was interested to know if anyone has tried those on a PN and if so what trailers they used. I am planning on using the SF4's. Keen to hear how they went.

    Thanks
