On Sunday we had overhead waves in good conditions and it was crowded too! All the boys were out it was actually quite good to be surfing in a crowd - you know that feeling when you're getting a lot of waves and surfing well, it feels something like winning! The peak was the best on the beach, it was fairly consistent but it was a slightly shifting a-frame. The rights were the pick most of the time with it standing up steeply at the take off and breaking onto itself and filling up slightly then standing up again and lining up for a speed run into the beach. A nice solid steep wall not quite barreling except occasionally if you were lucky. The lefts off the other side weren't as good because the rip was running with it and didn't have as much speed and some filled up. Though occasionally when the peak shifted a bit the left would be good and fire off all the way to shore.
Because of this rip which got stronger in-shore there was the odd sensation of catching a right and you'd end up having to paddle out around the left. Occasionally if the right broke all the way to the beach and far enough across you actually paddle back out around the right but you were still paddling away from it. After 4 hours I was pretty smashed and had a lot of waves both lefts and rights and a few sets on the head too. I'm still finding the sweet spots but taking off is a breeze on steeper face and late drops are more makeable. Some of the rights though were very steep drops onto a very flat bottom so they were tricky but a poo stance seemed to handle the speed and then the sudden slowing down before it lined up again.
There were 2 things I really liked, first the ability to just carve turns and do manoeurvres without having to nurse the board for fear of the rail jumping out, second the speed generation capabilities. On other boards where I might be stuck behind the pocket a bit and never get out of there unless the wave slowed up, the hellfire seemed to be able to turn straight off the bottom and go up and hit the lip and build more speed and make it. This worked just as well forehand or backhand. Sometimes you had to do it a couple of times but that just made it look and feel even better!
It was nice to surf it in a bit of juice and find it really was confidence inspiring.
Jesus is coming, look busy!

This past year I've been riding a 5'8'' Spitfire and 6'1'' Lost f-1 here in central Florida. I'm 6'0'' tall and 150-155lbs (68-70kgs). Volume on the Spitfire often felt a bit much (length was great) but volume felt perfect on the 6'1'' F-1. What size hellfire would you recommend? 5'8'' or 5'10''? I'm kinda thinking 5'8'' Hellfire but have read on a few of the forums that guys in the 160-165lb range are riding the 5'10'' (and some riding 5'8''). Also I've read on here that a few guys in the 85-90kg range ride the 5'10'' so I tend to think the 5'10'' hellfire might be a bit much volume for me. I'd love to be able to ride the board in waist to overhead/hurricane swell conditions. Any advice?

yeah i agree with k drop in. I grabbed the 510 hellfire at first at 6'0, 175lbs but definitely prefer the 508 now. It has plenty of volume for someone of your weight.
hope this helps!

Thanks! yeah it does! 5'8'' it is! Looking forward to reporting how it goes..
just thought i would throw in my hellfire reviews, I took Chris's advice last year and at 90-92kg bought the 602 hellfire, I can safely say this board is probably one of the best boards I have ever owned, it takes late sucky drops with ease the nose never digs in or catches rail it just drops in and holds and is so smooth out of the bottom turn and feels alive and so responsive, it has had me performing moves that i had forgotten how to do (had a few years out of surfing due to work and higher education) and the speed is incredible . it really is a magical board and deserves more credit than i think it gets, I had a go on a friends 602 FST Lost Sub-Scorcher the other day and compared to my hellfire it felt like surfing a log, my friend couldnt believe how well my hellfire paddled and dropped into waves so easy that he didn't want to swap back lol!!! I have a custom PU 5'11 Lost rocket that i honestly dont want to surf as my hellfire just blows it away !!
My only complaint is that at 90-92 kg im right on the limit for it being a tad on the small size for my weight especially surfing in West Wales with my 543 hooded winter suit, 5mm booties and gloves roll on summer !! Chris when will we ever be able to order custom firewire boards in the UK? then i could tweak the volume a litre or so for winter!!

good stuff pudzee.
I think a lot of what people are liking is the double barrel bottom contour. On a high performance hybrid, it really helps add reliability!!!
