I have got to say I am pretty disappointed with this. I saw the headline...Nev's take on...... and thought we were going to delve into a cerebral discussion on the virtues of tight shorts, a porno moustache and a police batton...but we are just talking about the El Fuego again. I think Nev's little video above would have had more credibility if he was wearing his usual "policeman" attire.

Nev, I can't choose what frame they use here in the embedded version. guess you are eternalized in the "popping out of box" pose.

Agreed, but what about the overall length of the board. By going considerably shorter on the length wouldn't you need to also adjust your stance??
Lets say from a flexfire 6'2" you go down to the potatoe 5'2"(trying to keep the volume leveled), wouldn't one have to adjust stance and approach drasticallu due to accute reduced rail length?? (I'm talking for us, the mortal ones!!!!)

yeah even for the immortals. its all physics. if you reduce length on the order you are talking about, typically you will wind up with a board that is wider and thicker as well. As a result, you will have an adjusted stance. I find on these boards your stance moves over the tail block so that you can get the most performance and response.

Iggy, yes. a little distortion going on. The board looks way wide and his torso looks WAY long. don't sweat it. the truly technical videos and photos designed to give a good idea of the board shape won't have any distortion.

Good stuff. Nev's really funny too. Still haven't had a chance to ride El Fuego. Looking forward to the next demo day. Potato and Fuego. Hot baked potato when you combine 'em.

I am 37yrs old, 5'10" 180 lbs, surfed for 20 years, ride a 6'0" Dominator in every condition possible here in North Carolina and love the board. I found your video on volume interesting. In weaker NC surf there are times when a board with lots more volume than my 6'Dom would seem like the right call. Help me understand why this thought seems to be the opposite of what you were saying on your video. I am thinking of a Sweet Potato at 5'8 or 5'10 for knee to thigh high surf, but if I understood your video, these two sized S. Potatoes would be way too much volume. Please help me understand. Thanks.

    hey bblackbu,

there is a limit to the truth of keeping the same volume and it definitely applies more completely to those boards that could be considered conventional.  this includes shortboards and high performance fish.  the sweet potato is an extreme board.  The SP has super inflated dimensions and is designed to surf the WEAKEST waves out there.

in Nev's clip, he is talking more of how you would choose a high performance hybrid like the Dominator, Spitfire or El Fuego based on your go to shortboard.  In good waves you might ride a traditional high performance board in with a volume of 28.5L.  As the waves get a little smaller and weaker you might grab a Dominator with a volume of 29L and an El Fuego with 28L.   These aren't actual volumes of he boards necessarily, but the point is that the volume of such boards should be pretty close to the same.

when thinking of tiny waves, you NEED added volume in order to surf.  You simply can't take a 28.5 L board in flat to 1ft conditions.  You might grab a longboard or a funboard, or a specialty like the SP.   The volume of these will DEFINITELY be higher than your more conventional shapes.

    hope this helps a little.

    Chris,
Thanks, your explanation helps. I'm leaning towards the 5'10 SP for 1' conditions. I know a much smaller SP would float me but I think the 5'10 would really really help on those crap days when I would typically go home. Thanks for your help. -B

speaking of volume, what is an easy way to figure out the volume of a surfboard just by knowing the dimensions?  Or is there an easy way?

    5' 5" (165cm), 155 pounds (70.3 kg) <> current board = 5'2" Dominator

You can imagine how many different plan shapes there could be for instance a 6'0" x 18" x 2 1/4". Not to mention the deck shape, foiil etc. Short answer it'd be impossible, and if it isn't I'd be very impressed with anyone who could figure it out!

    6'0" 170lbs
    6'2" x 18.44" x 2.38" Taj
    6'0" x 18.81" x 2.38" Taj CBD
    5'8" x 19.25" x 2.31" Sub Scorcher
    5'8" x 20.00" x 2.38" Spitfire RF

if you REALLY want to, the best way is to do water displacement.  but that will be really difficult to do accurately....
