Hey I am looking to buy a sweet potato. I am 5ft7in and weigh 150. I live in florida and my everyday board is a 5'10 and when the waves get about head high I ride a 6'0. What size sweet potato should i buy? I dont want to buy the wrong size and not be happy with it.
Im think the 5'0. How would the sweet potato be on waves like the ones we have in Jacksonville today?
check em out at surf-station.com
yeh it would go great in conditions like that, after all that i what its designed for. The 5'0 is probably the safe option, the best bet would be to go into a shop and have a look at a 5'0 and see how it feels. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to wait till one of the firewire guys chimes in as they know the boards best.
yeah jsnstancil,
I ended up getting the 5'2. I am not 100% with the decision. Since I am kinda short (5'7) i think I should have got the 4'10 so that I wouldnt need as wide of a stance. The sweet potato is a great board though, I will def. get another.
Hi I am looking to buy a sweet potato. I am 1,69m and weigh 72 kgs live and surf in west side France (lacanau-hossegor). I already try a 5'6 potato. It was really funny....but i feel her biggest for me. What size sweet potato should i buy? Can you help me to choose a good size ?
Cheers.
Bon jour jeromy.
Hi everyone, I've recently purchased a 5'9" El Fuego and must say, I am absolutely loving it! I live in perth and have surfed it in small onshore Trigg to 5 ft Bears. Currently riding it as a quad and having so much fun. However, with summer coming up I have made up my mind I want to get a sweet potato. The only problem is, I can't decide between the 5'2" or 5'4". I'm turning 40, 5'11' tall and weigh 70kg. Ability wise, I would consider myself to be an average surfer. The volume calculator and board guide charts point to the 5'2" (or smaller) as being the right size for me. That just seems so small. I'm not a super surfer who whips it around, I just want to have fun in the small summer stuff that Perth dishes up on a daily basis. Usually in summer I ride a mal, catch heaps of waves and have a load of fun. But I want a sweet potato as well. They just look so different and like so much fun. I need to make a decision soon as I am buying it for myself as birthday present. Who would have thought, turning 40 and buying a board in the low 5 foot range. Before I got the El Fuego I was riding a 6'2" or 6'5". Makes me wonder how many years I wasted on the wrong size/type of board.Oh, and I've tried searching out a demo board in Perth but only found one, which was 5'10", which seemed a waste of time trying as it was so far out of my size range. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Yo Macco,
Valid concern.
I'm 42, 6'1", 147 lbs and the 5'2" is just right for me. Best thing to do is hold one which will give heaps of info.
I was out with a guy riding a 5'10" and he thought the board was a tad bit too much and would have preff'd a 5'6" or a 5'8". He weighs 200 lbs.
Feeling the board will tell you all.

I weight about 190 with with wetsuit and surf a 5'4 with ease, Im a fairly good competent surfer. I also longboard. The sweet potato is what I use in contests when its under head high it has the ability to allow you to generate huge speed by roller coasting where as on the dominator you would be losing the wave or stalling on the flats.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Sounds like the 5'4" might be a tad too big for me. In saying that, I would love to try either a 5'2" or 5'4" as a demo. Surferireland, I also find it bizarre that I can't get a demo in Perth. The closest shop that has firewire demos is 3 hours away where the surf is far too big and powerful for a sweet potato. Might have to go find one in a store so at least I can hold one, like aurfalien suggested.
hey macconvert, yeah demoes are a little scarce these days as demand has skyrocketed and we have had to reduce production due to the floods. Sorry for the inconvenience but I must say that at your weight, you would be super happy with the 502....
Mac,
How is your paddling?
The guy riding the 5'10" was picking of a few more then I at 5'2" but I was giving him a good run for the money.
I'm kook level but when I paddle, I really dig.
So don't be shy to go a tad bigger.

Loving the feedback guys. I decided to go have a look at a 5'2 and 5'4 in a shop, pick them up and have a feel as you suggested aurfalien. Unfortunately, after ringing around I've discovered not one shop in Perth (that I can find) has either of these boards. One guy even told me Firewire wont have any until the middle of January (maybe you can confirm this for me Chris). Spewing as I was really hoping to pick one up this week for my birthday. I might try the online option, although I'm still not sure of what size is best. As I mentioned in my earlier post I'm riding a 5'9 El Fuego, which has a volume of 28.6L. The 5'2 potato has only slightly more volume at 32.2L, where as the 5'4 has 35.7L. As I want it as an alternative small wave board for my mal, is the slight increase in volume of the 5'2 going to be enough. Chris, you seem to think I fall into the 5'2 range, which agrees with the volume calculator. It calculates that my volume range is between 24.6 to 32L. Do you think the 5'4 is way too big for me? Cheers guys, the feedback is very helpful.
I was in a similar quandary in choosing an SP of 5'2" or 5'4". No one local had them and 1 shop agreed to get both knowing I would choose only one.
Firewires sell pretty well so its not that big a deal for shops to order extra inventory.
I mean look at your experience, no one had any as they prolly sold out.

Hey Mac,
Chris, No luck in Perth what so ever. Every shop was out of sweet potatoes in both the 5'2 and 5'4 range. In fact, from what I can gather, there is only about 2 or 3 sweet potatoes in Perth. Very depressing! The closest I came to what I want was a 5'4 in a shop down south - 3 hours away. I'm actually going down to have a look at it at the end of next week- that is if they still have it. Hopefully they do, because until I can actually hold either the 5'2 or 5'4, I'm not certain which one I want. Unfortunately I wont get it, even if it is the right size, as I definitely know I want future fins and with the rapid fire finish (my El Fuego has the FST finish). The 5'4 down south has FCS with the FST finish. So, Chris, if there was a chance to get something allocated that would be AWESOME! On the weekend I sent an email to your online distributor to see what stock they had, and was told if I didn't put an order in on Monday I would be waiting up to 3 months for a board. Panicking, I shot an email to your sales department to check the validity of this info - which was unfortunately confirmed. Hey, I just checked the email and I think you responded. Are you the warehouse officer? Anyway, no matter what, I find myself in the horrible position of not being able to even see a board, let alone buy one anytime soon. So, Chris, if there is any chance I can get a board allocated please let me know!
Hey I sent an email to the AUS folks and if anyone can make it happen, they'll be the ones. Keep in touch here for a response.
Hi aurfalien
Pretty sure you are the same customer I have been emailing. So just confirming the situation as per my emails:
Only have the FST Sweet Potato 5'4 with FCS fin set up
available at the end of this month, no Futures. Only you can make the choice.
Will leave it with you. If you want it, just let me know and we'll arrange for
the purchase through your local FW dealer. Otherwise, if you want a different
combination, simply place the order with your local FW dealer and we'll get you
next available board of your choice.
From feedback on the Sweet Potato, it's worth the wait!
Hit me back with an email if you need any more assistance.
Cheers
Nikki
