Looking to go smaller

    Good evening everyone

First off I would l like to say I am extremely impressed with all of the information on this page. With that being said, I am looking to step down to a smaller board from my 7' 10'' Fish/Hybrid. I have heard a lot of great things about the Addvance but was confused when I went into my local surfshop and was told it wouldn’t be a good board for me. I am 6 foot 190 poud, 26 year old ex-college football player with solid strength and am having a hard time finding the right "next step" to help me progress (I consider myself above beginner, on the cusp of intermediate). I live in Carlsbad, CA and surf throughout San Diego where the waves are between 2-5 feet this time of year. Does anyone have any suggestions on what FW board would be the right fit me? 6'6'' Addvance, 6'10'' Addvance or something different?

    Thanks everyone

    Hey Zrjones,

stoked on the support and interest in Firewire.

One thing to remember is that the process involved in choosing a board can be subjective.  One person's perspective can influence what they suggest.

In my opinion, the Addvance, at least superficially, would offer the opportunity to downsize your board and improve maneuverability.  It isn't a SUPER high-performance board, but when compared with your current board, you are going to make many improvements without taking a very big step back.

How would you describe your ability?

    Cheers!

    Hi ZR

As Chris says on the surface AddVance could be a good option. It depends on how big a step you want to take, and how the AddVance compares to your current board. It would also help to describe your skills/ability a bit more. Addvance would be a step towards a more manouverable board with more performance in the sense it is light and a refined shape and construction. Without knowing all the info, a 6'10 might be a fairly gradual step towards more performance, but would definitely be a pleasure to surf, and give a boost to your surfing experience.

6'6 Addvance would be a bigger step to a higher performance again. But If you do want to make a big step you could also look at other Firewire hybrids such as Dominator or Hellfire, given your strength and fitness. More information might enable other people here to offer suggestions. My suggestion always is it is good to take your time to explore the information and think about your own preferences and surfing conditions. I ride a 7'2 Addvance - 53 yrs 185lbs. All the best

I appreciate such a quick and thorough response.

Although I am sure my skill level is pretty subjective, I would consider myself on the lower levels of an intermediate. I can catch the majority of the waves I paddle after and ride the face fairly easily. I have not progressed to the point where I am throwing any cut backs or aggresive moves (I surf 2 to 3 times a week). The board I am currently riding is older and fairly heavy, that in combination with the length makes me feel like I am ready for my first new board purchase. My only hesitation is purchasing a board that will only allow me to progress a small amount before I am ready for the next step...

Thanks for all the help so far...

Agree with Chris,ADDVANCE its an excellent choice.Wide stable platform, this board despite its dimensions moves quite well. It's a board that will keep you progressing constantly. Right after you will want to switch to a Spitfire

Agree with Iggy - Take too big a step and your surfing suffers by not having the board suited to your stage of surfing. AddVance turns, manouvers and can fly pretty well, is a quality shape and versatile. If you take a big step be prepared to work pretty hard to catch waves and to refine your skills, and may be even go backwards or a while. A progression of boards is the way to improve and makes progress more enjoyable and satisfying.

Thanks Iggy and JV. Any suggestions on the length between the 6'6'' and 6'10'' for a guy with my dimensions?
