Please tell me your Name, Age, hometown and Occupation:
My name is: Gavin Gillette I'm 23 years young. My home town is Kilauea Kauai' and I'm a professional surfer and an alkaline water salesmen from a company called enagic.
How did you discover Firewire?
I was surfing a local spot back home. I saw my dad paddled out super excited. I saw that he had a fire wire and he let me give it a try. I loved it right away and it wasn't even my size. We then went down to Backdoor surf shop in Hanalei were they had samples. I ended up getting the 6'0" fire flex and it's been the best shortboard I’ve had in years ... possibly ever.
What is your take on Firewire Tech/boards?
I’ve always had problems with my short boards with weight issues and durability. Now I have a board that is super light, responsive, exciting and new, and best of all it lasts for years. The technology is incredible.
Can you Share a story where you where blown away on your board, like a maneuver a contest result or breaking a board.
The flexfire 6'0" short board did some amazing things this year. For one I caught a 10 ft second reef left at pipe on it. I don't even catch those waves on my guns and somehow I pulled off a second reef wave. It also caught some amazing first reef pipe bombs this year. All of it will be on the FireWire website in a couple months. I also broke the same board at pipe this year. I airdropped into a last one. My front foot slipped off and I did a crazy backflop with my head facing the beach. On the photage you can see the board hovering in the air from the trade winds. The lip lands on the board and the thing seriously broke and flew into the air spinning. It’s the best wipeout clip I've had by far.
I’m trying to get people to understand that boards made out of foam can and will break under the right impact; do you have any broken board stories?
I have to many to tell. But before I rode firewires I would break at least 4 to 6 boards a winter. This year I broke only two firewires and they were some of the scariest wipeouts I've ever had. Both times when I broke the firewires when I got to the beach the lifegaurds were on there four wheelers coming to get me to see if I was all right. You have to understand that those lifegaurds watch the craziest wipeouts all day long. They hardly ever come up to someone to see if they are alright. So I know that those wipeouts looked really bad And any board would've broken on those waves. I'm just fortunate I didn't break cause I know those FireWires and stronger than I am and they broke like twigs.
Are you paid by Firewire surfboards?
Just getting free boards is like getting paid. But say I get a cover shot or something like that I would get a check. I'm not worried about that at all cause the boards are working great. I haven't had a good short board in years and I ca't believe how much I love these boards. It's like a dream come true really. I believe this could be the beginning of a great relationship. The future is now
