SA Longboarding Champs - The SA Longboarding champs were held from the 26th of April to the 1st of May at Seal Point, Cape Saint Francis. It was a massive, week long event with over 50 heats and 200 competitors.
Firewire had a tent down at the event for the entire week. Demo longboards were available for the competitors, family and friends to try out at the Seal Point Beachie. The boards were very well received with all and sundry coming by the tent to pick up a board and feel the rails.
Firewire was represented in the event by the ever stylish Dylan Mcleod in the Open Division. Dylan ended up coming 7th in the event.
Grant Byram stopped by the Firewire tent before his quarter final and on the spur of the moment decided to surf the FFF900Q in his heat. Never having ridden the board before, Grant won the heat and went on to surf the board through the semis and into the final eventually finishing 4th.
Country Feeling donated a Firewire as a prize which was given to the winner of the Open Boys. Scott Lefevre won the division and stopped in at the country Feeling Surfshop to pick up a brand new Taj 6’1 before heading back up to Durban. Congratulations Scott!!
The Xcel Showdown
The Xcel Pro Showdown was held on the 11th of May in pumping 4-6ft conditions at Supertubes, Jeffreys Bay. Firewire surfboards dominated the event with 4 separate surfers riding Firewire’s in their heats. Craig Els and Pablo Thysmaan both rode an FST 6’2 round pin in their heats. Deon Lategan rode his Direct Drive 6’2 round pin in his heat and after getting barrelled wave after wave went through to the semi finals where he was eventually knocked out by event runner-up Remi Peterson.
Ryan Payne, riding a direct drive 6’2 squash, took out the event with a combination of critical power turns and deep tube rides. “Fastest board I’ve ever ridden, the carbon rods that are joined to the fin boxes act like a spring when you drive or turn, it’s pretty mind blowing how well it works!” Ryan Payne on his Direct drive after winning the Xcel Pro.
Country Feeling Surfshop donated a Firewire board for the best manoeuvre of the event which was won by Dale Staples. Firewire Intl donated another Firewire board for the best wave of the event which was won by Warren Dean. After testing various boards Warren settled on a 5’10 Dominator, for ripping small waves apart.
- The 2010 Xcel Pro Showdown Results:
