Single Sessions, Ep. 11: Spun Honey vs. Mashup with Kevin Schulz

Press play above to watch Kevin Schulz in Single Sessions Episode 11 comparing two shapes built in our best-selling Helium Technology: a stock 5'4" Spun Honey by Dan Mann and a stock 5'4" Mashup by Rob Machado and Dan Mann. This episode was filmed at Lowers, in San Clemente, CA.

Single Sessions is your opportunity to eaves drop on aspirational performances in relatable waves –the world’s best surfers in everyday conditions riding Firewire Surfboards and Slater Designs shapes built in Helium, I-Bolic 2.0, and Proflex Technologies.

Kevin's verdict? While both small wave shapes are great in average-to-poor conditions like summertime in southern California, the Spun Honey is a very user-friendly board that has tons of flow and helps you carry your speed through sections, while the Mashup is more reactive in the lip and a bit better suited for higher-performance small wave surfing with it's more refined shape and outline.

The Spun Honey is Dan Mann's refined, high-performance groveler based on the Spitfire. It offers more performance than Dan's Sweet Potato, but less performance than his Dominator 2.0, an ideal board for surfers pushing performance in weak, everyday conditions.

The Mashup is a collaboration between Rob Machado and Dan Mann, and is a melding of each of their most popular designs: Rob's Seaside and Dan's Spitfire. Mix and matching theirfavorite design elements from each shape, they landed on something that goes as fast in weak waves as the Seaside, and also drives vertically in good waves as well as the Spitfire.

Kevin rode the Spun Honey with the Spun Honey Fin Set, and the Mashup with both the Firewire Velox Fin Set and Spun Honey Fin Set in this episode.
